Should you buy a gun or not?

CHICAGO - So far this year, Chicago has had more murders and more people shot than in the previous three years.

Statistics released by the Chicago Police Department on Monday, November 1, show that so far in 2021, 678 people in Chicago have been murdered. That's higher than the past three years from January 1 to October 31:
  • 2021: 678 murders
  • 2020: 661 murders
  • 2019: 432 murders
  • 2018: 489 murders
Given that there are 343 days between Jan 1 and November 1, that's 1.98 murders per day just in Chitown. That number only counts for murders. It doesn't count shootings where someone was injured but didn't die.

Sad.

For a rundown on Chicago, take a peek at www.heyjackass.com (my apologies if someone already linked to it - can't recall if it was in this thread or not)...

Illinois is #8 in the nation for gun related fatalities (latest available data I could find is 2019). Not even the top 5. Chicago will need to try harder...

The question for me is wether I should own one, it’s which one to carry. My go to carry is a Colt Detective.357

I’m changing my mind on the CCW question. I’m starting to buy into the “…better to be alive in court defending yourself than dead and buried…” which is my son’s argument w me.

We’re trying out a Sig this Sunday.

See, everybody talkin about this kid shot people right or wrong.
Fact is, if he stayed home, smoking pot, eating pizza, playing video games with his buds, he wouldn’t have been in that situation.

Maybe but there would also be a pedophile, and a wife beater still alive. Besides, I think the whole country is served by the outcome.

You jest, but that is major problem. Many who get hit are not the intended targets.
then maggie correct , target pratice would help sir. % would go up.

I love those new double barrel derringer made by some Texas company starts with a B, but starting at $500 is a lil rich for me to put in a drawer.
Bond? Maybe Bond.
Yes bond. They are great if you can find for the right price.

all of my semi auto pistols are 40 cal, I am really wanting a 45 cal. anyone have any suggestions.
Well when you say semi-auto and 45 cal in the same sentence then the first stop is a 1911. Then it comes down to your budget and your planned use because you can go from a few hundred to thousands in cost, and find anything from super accurate competition race guns to lumps that are more useful as a club than a firearm.

That also means you can quickly go down the 1911 rabbit hole and get wrapped up in the whole discussion of what is a real 1911.

I have owned several 1911s in 45 ACP, as well a couple in 9mm. Just about all of the major manufacturers have 1911 models, and there are a number of makers who only do 1911s. I am presently down to two: a Springfield EMP 4 and Colt Competition, both in 9mm. I’ve sold all of the 45s because they really aggravated the arthritis in my wrists.

I have direct experience with Colt, S&W Performance Center, and Springfield Armory models. I live in state with a roster of approved models, so I have been limited to mainstream makers, but based on the custom work they did to one of my Berettas, I would also add Wilson Combat. And that is the other thing, there are a number of gunsmith outfits, Wilson and Briley come to mind who will take your old and tired 1911 and for a few more thousand turn it into a showpiece.
