The FAA has dropped the ball and we continue on without clear regulation of drones, so I thought it would be interesting to discuss this since so many boaters like to fly them.

I'm completely with OldSkool on the privacy issue.
Another thing we are missing is liability, what happens when one of these is powered into someone or something causing injury or damage? :smt021
Yes they are small but just like with the RC planes, it can happen.

what happens if your hit with blue ice from an aircraft? what happens if your hit by a falling tree driving down the street? what happens if a car runs through your house? what happens if ?????? and on and on....get it? I know I'm not going through life wondering "what if"
To be honest most of us probably will NEVER see a drone (I know I haven't yet)....and if ya do I'm sure the operator won't want to record any of your ugly asses.

You guys are way too hung up on the privacy aspect. I think every worry presented here, even MM's concerns with the pervs, is addressed by existing law...stalking, harassment, peeping, eavesdropping, noise, nuisance, trespassing, and more. We may have to adjust some to fit any unique twists brought by drones but the base is well covered.
Yes, people have been injured and even killed by these things. The question of liability....all I can think is what's any different. I injure you with my boat, motorcycle, car, atv, fist, I'm liable. If I fly my drone into a group of people at the park wouldn't I be liable? We already have laws addressing responsibility for our actions.
I just hope the CSR gun slingers don't use their arsenals to indiscriminately blast whirring, whirling objects from the sky. Hey there's one now, I think he's looking at me, Ka-boom....dusted like a clay pigeon.:smt043 It could negatively impact some ‘feelings’ on gun rights, it could make 2nd Amendment supporters look bad.

Ok so maybe I should "blast" your boat while you are on the water because you may be looking at my beautiful Tiara while I am on the water. I can't believe some of the off the wall stuff I am reading. Oh and when I get my Quadcopter I will keep it away from everyone lest I may see a person and violate your privacy. Maybe we should all hide in your houses with the blinds drawn. Question for some here, Does your car have dark window tint as well so people can't see you driving? I never knew we had so many high profile important people on this board. I am honored to be among royalty.
To all the people here I am really not a jerk. Just an average guy that works very hard for what I have. Please don't take me wrong as I mean no disrespect. What I find disrespectful is someone actually thinks its ok to blast a toy that someone worked hard and saved 1000 bucks to buy to make cool videos so others on here may enjoy. There is a member on this site that has made some cool videos that you guys seemed to enjoy if I recall, I know I did.

Yep, I always told my kids about us needing to keep an eye out for the paparazzi when we won the World Championship offshore race, now we have the drones to worry about too. :smt043

It is sadder you will not answer serious questions engage in a useful discussion. I had hoped to find out where you would draw a line. Apparently you really want no restrictions on the use of drones if you will not condemn their use by "pervs". Be careful what you wish for.
I expected several here to love their drones and only look through that lens. I also had hoped we would find out what members thought about using drones in neighborhoods, public parks, public beaches, and over public streets?

What about all the Ultralights & Gyro Copters.
They can fly as low and slow as they want too over your house or just about anywheres.
Beaches,Playgrounds, Schools, and so on.
2 places they can't fly near is prisons and county jails.

Right now there are no clear rules for drone use and their likely will not be until 2017 as noted in the first post. Many questions concerning drone use over private property, public property (parks, city streets, etc.) have not been answered. as with most threads this one meanders around with many points unrelated to the other.
I agree some of the issues raised can be addressed by existing law, but some cannot. Your liability question is one I have wondered about myself, if you can find the owner and they have homeowners insurance that would likely cover it. One way that registration would help is that putting an identifying registration number on them would make it easier to find the owner that may have damaged your property.
Someone said they had never seen one so it can't be a big deal. The prices are falling fast and soon anyone will be able to afford some type of drone. Then they will then become disposable and likely the source of "hit and run" incidents.
Yes, your picture can be taken when you are in public but the laws were written with the thinking a person would take the picture, not a flying camera controlled by someone not even in sight. The BIG question is, just where and when do people have the right to fly these things?
So, please share with all us where you think drones should be allowed to fly?

Kevin, have I missed the part where someone said lets go out hunting drones in the wild? I thought we were talking about regulation?? As in 'I do not want thieves casing my neighborhood with quad copters, or snoopy neighbors hovering over my house, or kids buzzing my dogs in the back yard, or my secluded anchorage thick with drones operated by people clearly not getting enough at home'. If you were in my back yard with a camera, it would be a pretty clear violation of the existing law. Trespass is a harder crime to prove with a quad copter that was just "out-of control", or 'taking aerial photo's of my neighbors house', or 'the wind blew it', or whatever. No one questions the coolness of the video footage that has been (and could be) acquired by this technology. The question is whether we should regulate how annoying you can be with it. This is the USA and some of us really fight against every freedom we loose, and every peace of privacy we relinquish to our government , or our fellow citizens. The 4th amendment has been slowly and carefully eroded away by our politicians but it still protects me from "unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause". We are afforded no real guarantee of "privacy" so far as I know. Here is what I feel the sentiments expressed in this thread are pointing toward. 1)Portable generators are BAD! 2) Not many of us trust that the affore mentioned "regulation" would protect us in any way, and suspect another money grab by our politicians. 3) With no government guidelines regulating quad copters with video camera's we are willing to be fairly vigilante about enforcing our own security. If you are taking cool pictures of a snowboard adventure or your boat on plane, you do not have much to worry about. If you are casing out my home, annoying my dogs, or operating your device in a fashion I think is intrusive, you had better be nice and have a ready explanation that does not include how hot my daughter is looking. I am just an average guy working hard for what I have as well. I do not play my stereo at top volume in the mooring field, or run my generator after 9:00PM. I do not drive in circles around other boats with hot girls snapping telephoto pictures. In general I respect my neighbors and fellow boaters and display the courtesy I expect from them. Drones have the potential to be a real problem, as well as very cool toys, and I have enjoyed the thread.

Good Point, but it is much harder to be sneaky in an ultra light, or a gyrocopter, as they sound like lawn mowers, and have much more limited maneuvering. Plus there are people on board, so if they did manage to get in my tree cloaked back yard, without five of my neighbors calling the police, they would have to risk being eaten by my dogs or still be in the tree when I came home.

Says you,:smt043 maybe being facetious? For decades this world has been filling up with automated cameras of all types with no actual operator to OK each frame. Street corners, store fronts, intersections, toll booths, SeaRay boat cams, beach cams, marina cams, bird in a nest cam, work shop cams, look at the neighbors messy yard cams(really), look at the neighbors hot wife mow the lawn videos, dude got his head beat videos, even head chopped off videos, stadium cams zooming you with recognition software, license plate reader cams(do you know about them), boat launch cams, inside the bar cams, woods trail cams, cams here....cams there....cams everywhere, 24 hrs a day non stop. Whatever, where ever, there are pics, videos, and cams in both public and private areas. Hell the CSR group currently even has a Snow Cam due to Wayne, thanks Wayne it's exciting.:lol: That cam is pointed at someones house, we can watch what they do in their yard all day long while the actual owner of the cam might never look.
Pictures and video are being made, some are saved, you're in them. You don't know what becomes of them, if they're ever viewed, or for what purpose. You need to understand, when you chuckle at the pics of fat beach chicks in thongs, or videos of people who can't back a trailer, or check out someone elses property with google maps....it might as well be you....it could be you. Your high expectations, your best shot at real privacy, will be inside your home or down in the cabin of you boat. Don't stand in front of that big living room window in your jockeys, some one walking the side walk could look your way and see you and they aren't doing anything wrong if it happens. In fact, if your neighbor across the street keeps seeing you in front of that window he might just video for a couple weeks and give it to the police so they can find out if you're some kind of kinkster.
Where can drones be flown? Setting the privacy issue aside. When I read about this I think safety, and nuisance become issues in public places, and physical drone trespass on private or other restricted areas.
It's a given the likes of airports, air traffic routes, and police, fire department, hospital helipads need their clearances so set height limitations and distances for them.
If these drones get as popular as they think I believe it'll end up as flying from designated/approved sites public and private. In regards to private property all properties are not equal. Location and size will be considered. Just like gun ownership....some folks have room and are allowed to shoot on their own property, other property owners don't/can't so they belong to a club or go to a public range. As far as areas deemed public or actual public lands again I think they'll have to be assessed for their suitability for recreational drone flying. I'm not in favor of hobbyist drones buzzing around Main St, public parks, schools, beaches, sporting events. Not because of photos, but because of safety and the nuisance factor.
Some of these drones are flown at night too. That will probably lead to some more rules for them to follow.

Woody, you blur the line between private and public. When I’m in public I am expected to act in a fashion that does not offend or harm people or property. I should understand that my image/actions can by recorded. Even then my permission is needed to publish my image.
When I’m in private, then it’s private. No trespassing or intrusion into my action while in private. Even if I break a law while in private, probable cause must be shown before investigations can happen.
When I am on my land, or in my home, I am in private. How hard is it to understand????
In PA the castle law allows me to put down an intruder that comes on my land or into my house if I feel threated by them.
Drones threaten me as being able to publicly humiliate, intimidate, and character assassinate me. I will act to eliminate that threat as prescribed under the laws of the land.
It’s not about the DRONE silly. It’s about the privacy.
Fly them if that’s your hobby. I would love to have one too. Take them to the beach, park, or wherever it’s PUBLIC. Just make sure the random people you show are not distinguishable or you may be in for a law suit if you publish them without permission.
