Suspect my temp gauge is not reading correctly…

My 5.0 MPI with Alpha1Gen2 typically runs at a hair above 170 when warmed up. Last two times I’ve been out it hasn’t gotten above 135. My first guess is the gauge or sensor is bad—is this an easy troubleshoot/fix? Is it possible the thermostat is stuck open and that’s the correct temp?
Second question would be if the gauge is reading incorrectly does that mean the engine could overheat without the idiot alarm going off? Or is there a separate sensor for the overheating alarm?
Thanks as always for any insight.

Great South Bay…huh.

Could be some seaweed or other debris got In There and it’s preventing the thermostat from fully closing

Sometimes a good ride at a higher rpm could help dislodge it. Or you may have to remove the thermostat housing and clean it out.

When was the last time you replaced the thermostat?
