My boat originally came with white. I had it on there for the first 3 years and switched to Captains Navy, the Navy still looks perfect since 1997. The white took its toll after 3 years and I am anal about keeping things spotless.

I have no idea how much would be needed to complete the job. I will try and find out I do like the Teal Tweed and that would be my fist choice I have looked at some of the other colors in the blue and green family and they just don't like rite Thats way I was thinking of black.
Yeah see if you can find out how much you need and I'll call my contacts.

Also find the Canvas # if you can.

We have white canvas, a drop curtain and an aft curtain. The drop curtain has gone through four seasons and still looks new. The aft curtain is up all of the time when the boat is in the slip or occasionally when we are on the hook or cruising. It looks like hell by mid June due to pollen. Then we take it to a commerical laundry and use liquid Tide and a cup of bleach and it comes out looking like new and stays that way all season. It is Sunbrella with no liner. We do keep a clean boat. It is washed every week and some times it gets rinsed between the wash. So, there is little dirt to run down from the top and get the canvas dirty. I bought two aft curtains when the boat was new. The plan was to switch them out when one started looking bad. So far no need and the unused curtain is still in the bag it came in.

You boat in MI, correct? MI average summer temperatures are in the mid 70's to low 80's mostly.

Doug
I boat in Michigan and our average temps at least in this area in summer are 80-95 with a lot of days hotter.

I think it depends on the kind of boat you have. A 29' SR has a very high bimini with lots of open area when canvas panels are removed. Color may not be such a big deal as with a larger SR where the top is almost always up as well as the side curtains. The size of the heat sink (canvas top) is also much bigger on a boat that is 40 feet long or bigger so much more heat is radiated into the cockpit on these boats than a smaller one which is typically operated with most of the canvas down and stowed. Still, the darker canvases are hotter. Get a thermometer out and collect some data. You will see the differences.

Guys thanks for all the suggestions and coments on this subject. I just got off the phone with Great Lakes and spent 1686.00 on new canvas. Should have it in 4-6 weeks. I'll let you all know how this turns out BTW I went with black

Black is "cool." I suppose you could also say that it's "hot." (;-)

I saw a documentary about desert heat survival and the garment color of choice is black, go figure....
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but black garmets cause you to sweat more because they retain heat better than lighter fabrics. Because you sweat more, the sweat actually has a cooling effect.

I seem to recall hearing that somewhere?

Doug

You will be fine with black. My brother (in-law) has black on his 270 Rinker... no problem with heat. And oh! wait... my new one has black... I'm right there with ya!

Just noticed this thread - I'm not sure if you are replacing everything or just the sunbrella protions (i.e. using the existing side windows and windshield to bimini filler panel) but - if you are only ordering the sunbrella portions I would suggest calling Great Lakes to make sure they are using the same size zipper you currently have. I replaced the bimini and side panes on our 94 weekender earlier this year and when I went to reuse the existing back panel, I found out that Great Lakes used a non-standard 8mm zipper on the new canvas. The old canvas (and just about everyone I talked to) used 10mm zippers. It was a minor pain (only because I already had an industrial sewing machine at home from an earlier canvas project) to find a suitable 8mm zippers for the back panel. If you are replacing everything all you will have to do is install the snaps. Even with this, Great Lakes is a really good deal - Mike H
