Ive got black canvas and a friend of mine does too. I havent noticed a difference in heat in the summer time due to the black canvas. As a matter of fact, i didnt notice any difference from my boat to his when i had my 240 with tan canvas and he had black on a Chaparral 250. The heat isnt an issue coming from a black canvas.

Why not just get exactly the color you'd like?

The Sunbrella web site lists 64 marine colors, with several of them that could be an exact match.
Great Lakes does not have the teal that is on the boat and can no longer get it The only teal they have is to green
The Baskin-Robbins 64 flavors of color are offered by Sunbrella, as shown on their web site.

Your vendor offers a subset of the available colors.

They could either get a bolt of the color you'd like, or you could select their vanilla choices.

There's a couple different things to look at....

1. If you have just a bimini top and no rear/side canvas, then you probably will notice no difference in heat between colors due to the open air design of your cockpit.

2. If you have a full canvas (top, rear, sides, windows, etc), you will notice a difference in heat between colors. I challenge anyone to take your black canvas, widows, etc and lock up the boat tight and take a temperature reading and compare that with the same setup using a lighter color canvas. This issue has already been confirmed by those with sedan bridges who line their windows with reflective material underneath black canvas to keep the heat out.

3. Obviously location where you boat will also a big driver on canvas color selection.

I really think that the Teal is just as hot, I have had both, only on a sedan bridge or aft cabin.

"The teal color that is on the boat is no longer made"

From reading the thread it sounds like the teal color is available, the retailer you contacted no longer stocks/has it though.

Personally I would think on this one a bit more. You may be getting what feels like a great deal/price, but will it be worth it if you are looking at your boat one day, say 3 months from now and think "I wish I would have went with the teal, the black just looks off/odd to me". Or you are selling it and the buyer asks why you went with black versus teal and you tell him you got a great price on the black?

I am not suggesting pricing is your motivation here. Maybe I missed something in your post/the thread. If it was me I would do a little more shopping with different retailers to see if I could get the teal since it matches your stripe.

A friend our ours has a Regal 32' cruiser with a teal hull stripe and new teal canvas. It looks sharp, much sharper than if he went with black canvas IMHO.

Just my opinion.

Good Luck. Great lakes is a good product. They would not engineer/build a capmer for me as they were never offered on boats above 30' from SR.

I may get them to do my cockpit cover though. If I can get a similar discount.
Great Lakes did the original canvas for your boat. I ordered a new set from them for Just Ducky. Their price was one half to one third of the other quotes.

Looking for some input and feed back. I am getting ready to order new canvas from Great Lakes Heres the issue I have. The teal color that is on the boat is no longer made. So I was thinking of going with black its the only color that I think would look good with the teal strip that is on the boat Let me know what you think

Teal is a a blue-green. Thus, colors in the blue, green, or tan families should look OK. Sunbrella makes a lot of colors. Take a look at what they offer.

Best regards,
Frank

I just spoke to Great Lakes I was told that the Teal Tweed canvas that I have now is now longer made but Sunbrella. I have called two local canvas makers 1 of them states he has some but not enough to complete the job the other says he has none of it. So I think I am going with the black I think it will look okay and even set off the teal strip even more. Thanks too all for your input and coments

It is a fact, I have a customer with a 400 EC that has all Teal Tweed Canvas right now and he wanted to replace it with the same thing. He is going dark gray instead since the teal tweed is in fact no longer made.

I had black for 9 years on my old 390EC............don't do it. We are in Florida and with an aft enclosure, the heat in the summer was almost unbearable. I have linen tweed on the 450 and there is a noticable difference in how hot the cockpit is in the summer.

The other problem with black is that I found that after about year 3, the canvas began to look washed out and a little faded..........it just showed its age sooner than lighter colors.

FInally, any time a vendor tells me something like its not available, my b.s detector begins to spin. Go to this site:

http://www.sunbrella.com/na/en/marine.pl

Select fabric showroom. I found Turquoise, #4610; Aquamarine, #4623; Persian Green, #4643; and Mineral Blue, #4687. Only you can tell if one of those matches your boat and suits you, but my view is that any one of them is better than black, which, aside from the heat and colorfast issues, just isn't going to look right on your boat.

You are dealing with an OEM vendor and it lis likely that what is going with the "its not available" is that Great Lakes meant "we don't stock that any more".

I find the cockpit of my boat with black canvas hotter when it is 95 degrees and humid than my 260 with tan canvas. I suspect the canvas is part of the issue. That being said - having canvas the color of spider poop is easier to keep the appearance of clean. I never cared for the tan canvas on my 260 and my parents have the medium blue on their Amberjack. I like the dark blues but am not crazy about the medium blue. If I was choosing a canvas color on my current boat. I would go with the dark hunter green. The black looks nice. But is not my first choice.

Do you know how much fabric they need. I have a customer that is a Sunbrella dealer and I can also check with the shop that did my cockpit cover. Is "Teal Tweed" the official color?

My 95 370DA came with the original " Teal Tweed " color.....that I like because there's not many around.....and its different. I wanted to re-do the entire canvas ....and keep it all original...... but also found out that it was a discontinued color..... So I started to hunt.........

It took me about 7-8 months and alot of calls and internet work.....but finally found a company called Outdoor Textiles that had a few rolls of " Teal Tweed " in storage. I purchased all they had at the time.....and had enough to redo the entire canvas.....and have enough leftover.....to redo my cabin runners and any repairs I may need in the future.

I also saved a bundle by supplying my canvas shop with the material.....and just had to pay for labor.

I have no idea how much would be needed to complete the job. I will try and find out I do like the Teal Tweed and that would be my fist choice I have looked at some of the other colors in the blue and green family and they just don't like rite Thats way I was thinking of black.

IMHO....... I like to try to keep the boat original.......only because Im anal.....don't know if it helps any in resale value.

I also was considering a redo in black......but my hull & boot strips are teal and my interior is all teal...............and didn't want to start changing it all.

I guess I was lucky....to find what I did...........and it looks great all done new in Teal Tweed.

Our 370 Express had grey canvas. A hot day for us is 90 degrees and does not happen all that often in northern Michigan where we have mostly high 70s to mid 80s. The grey canvas made our boat unbearably hot in the cockpit. It was so hot that we spent much more time below than we preferred. On a 90 degree day, a candy thermometer on the rear deck would reach 100 degrees in just a few minutes. Lay the thermometer on the helm seat and you are looking at 110 degrees. Put your hand near the bimini top and you can feel really hot air radiating into the cockpit. Sitting at the helm, you feel this on your head.

Same weather conditions described above with a white hardtop, and the helm temp drops 10 degrees below the the back deck reading. Add helm air and you are looking at 70-73 degrees in just about any air temp the summer dishes up.

Absent a hardtop and helm air, I would go for white Sunbrella on a recanvas project.

We used "royal blue" sunbrella material on our last boat and on a hot/sunny day you really could feel the heat radiating down from the boat top. Also, we opted not to have the material vinyl lined. With a hard rain, a fine mist got through the material - enough that we could not stay in the cockpit during a heavy downpour.

Our present boat has the light tan material with vinyl liner (on the top part only). It's MUCH COOLER and totally waterproof even in the longest/hardest rain.
