What would you do? A certain someone  named a boat "Mission Accomplished". Do you act superstitious and keep it, do you acetone it off and start over? Thoughtful suggestions would be appreciated. :smt038

I'm not a supersticous person, BUT, there is a certain protocol to follow. I'm not saying I'd follow it to the tee, but a simple ceremony and an offering to posidon couldn't hurt. Heck you can have fun with it and turn it into a good time party with everyone participating. I do it for every boat I rename. I should have paid better attention in spelling class!

If the boat has been Federally Documented, you have to file a name change with them. I don't know whether you need to do that at the time of you make the change, or in the following year when you renew. Depending on your state, you may have to do a name change there as well.

After that you can treat it like a christening. As you can see from the attached link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_naming_and_launching

Whoever does it usually ends up throwing a big party.

I am pretty sure that if it is documented you will have to documented it and pay the fees when you rename it. I know when I purchased mine and wanted to keep the boat documented, and was told by Vann marine Services, if I wished to rename the boat, that would be the time to do it, else later on, I would have to pay to re-document with name change.

See this link

Boat Name Change

HOW DO I CHANGE THE NAME OR HAILING PORT OF MY VESSEL?

The name and/or hailing port may be changed by filing an application for change on form CG-1258 with the appropriate fees. If your vessel is subject to a mortgage of record, you must obtain permission from the mortgagee on form CG-4593.

I've never been very supersticious during my life except for on time.

I was partners on a beautiful 1985 23' Cobalt that we bought in 1989. The boat had a name and we kept if for about 3 years. About that time I left the partnership and my ex-partner decided to change the name. There was no ceremony. He just had the old one removed and the new one painted on.

Soon began a series of mishaps that some might call coincidence but I'm not so sure. The boat sank, or took on enough water to pickle the engine, 3 times. Then the boat started going through motors mostly through water ingestion from the exhaust manifolds back to the cylinders. He put 7 different engines into a 1985 Cobalt.

Now the boat ran perfect for more than 7 years without any problems and after a simple name change stuff started happening.

Bad luck? Neglect? Maybe. But I will NEVER change the name of a boat without the ceremony. It may sound silly but hey....but if a few ceremonial words, a few bottles of grog and a party appease whoever....then I say, "Rock 'n' Roll!"

I had a boat once that I changed the name and did not do the name changing ceremony. What ensued was not good. I had a major $ repair every year that I owned it. I am very good about preventive maintenance and things still happened that were just unbelieveable. No sinkings, just repairs. I did not change the name of my current boat, but I change the hailing port. I had the ceremony just to notify of the owner change, etc. No surprises yet.

When you rename your boat, make fun of the old name as you remove it. I have pics of my son and I removing the old name, but I doubt I can post them here. So Ill describe he picture. The Boat was named ***** Cat II then under that, Old Bridge NJ. When we took the pics we eliminated Cat II and Old B NJ. SO all that was left was P%$$# Ridge!
Sounds like the name of a town, Just not sure what kind?

FYI I'm not supersticious.

I have to admit I completely overlooked the party quality of the event. Plus the admiral has taken a liking to the name. She's not even a big Bush fan!

Peel any old graphics off with the wrong name, apply new graphics with new name.

Anything else is frikkin silly. Ya'll take this whole boat thing too seriously!
