When i wired mine, the installation instructions were a bit vague about that. As I recall, it seemed to indicate a wire going to the battery positive terminal. I thought, well, maybe this thing has a memory? But then there was no switched wire either. So, I wired it up to the ignition switch run position, so it will only be on when the switch is in the run position. Sounds like you have wired it up direct, and it will never shut off, eventually draining the battery.
Figure out which temrinal on your ignition switch is only hot when in the run position. Then, trace it back to a point in the wire where you can tie into it.

Maybe I read your post wrong. You said you wired it up to the key. Do you mean you want to shut if off when the key is in the run position? Don't think you can do that...why would you want to?

 

i was just curious. cant really think of a reason why i would want to shut it off. but the directions dont say you have to wire it to a key on wire. it says you can wire it to the battery so in that situation you would want to be able to shut it off.

 

i emailed humminbird and they say you cant shut it off. you need to wire in a switch if you want to shut it off.
