A little help please.

I'm in a contract for a 310 Sea Ray w/ twin, merc 5.7, mpi, 260hp. Took boat out for sea trial and as soon as throttling up two alarms went off and engines went to limp mode. Oil pressure and temp were good. Both engines idled beautifully. Didn't matter if the boat was in gear or not, throttle up alarms.

Ideas?

Thanks
John

Time to look at other boats?

The seller is in the process of sorting it out, and letting me know what they come up with. The broker has a Sea Ray guy coming out to diag it. It was strange that both engines were doing the same thing. Do those engines share any systems that could trigger the alarms in both?

It sounds like you did not have your own mechanic with you on the sea trial. I hope you are having a surveyor look at before you close this deal. If you are not, there is a strong chance you will get burned in an expensive way.

Hooking up a code reader to the EFI engines should clear up the mystery since there was both an audible alarm and a dramatic reduction of power. Water sensors can be problematic and should one fail it will produce a double beep every minute and reduce the power to 90% initially but will reduce much further if you exceed a certain RPM. With the engine running perfectly well other than that, I'd say wait a bit to get an explanation of the fault.

You still have not told us a year! I will say 2006 give or take has a very expensive flaw in the fuel system. If the cool fuel module has not been replaced I would open it up and look for paint inside. Even if your current issue is solved, those units are an easy $4000 time bomb if you have a mechanic do it.
