zincs

If they are seawater cooled Mercruisers, there aren't any................... There may be some in the heat exchangers if the engines were converted to or came with freshwater cooling. Back then most boats were delivered with seawater cooling and the dealers converted to FWC using aftermarket kits, so you may have to do some trial and error removal of brass plugs in the heat exchangers to see if there are anodes attached.

thanks. they are fwc. i was just wondering if there was anything special i had to do to remove them from the heat exchangers. oh well, time for new coolant anyway.

I have FWC 454s on my boat and there are no engine zincs... Only my westerbeke genny has a zinc. The are a hull, trim tabs and shaft zincs...

My understanding is that these engines were designed to drain when shut down so there are no zincs in the heat exchanger or in the crankcase or trans fluid coolers. Crusaders DO have zincs in the heat exchangers. I have had the HEs off my boat and there was no seawater in them when I went to remove them. Maybe Merc got something right with the design.

Y'all be careful...........most boats were sold back then with seawater cooling. The dealers then converted them after delivery to FWC. Many dealers used aftermarket conversions and painted the heat exchangers black. I'm sure the customers were charged the cheaper aftermarket price instead of the Merc list $. We really don't know if he has Merc or another type of heat exchanger or whether it drains like Mers do or not.

Thanks all. It makes sense that a zinc would be on the seawater side. The build sheet shows fwc. Will find out more when i next get to see her.
