I need a new dipstick for my starboard ZF HSW 800 V1. I forgot to look at it this weekend to see what it looks like. I say I need a new one, the pre sale engine survey says the dipstick is not the correct one. This survey was done by a prospective buyer before me, so I was not present for the survey to ask for details.

I see multiple types here: https://www.sbmar.com/product-categ...rine-transmission-parts/zf-marine-dip-sticks/

Does anybody know which one I need? If not I will look this weekend while on the boat.

I want to check the levels before we cast off for a 7 hour trip. It looks as simple as warming them up, shutting them down and pulling the stick: https://www.sbmar.com/articles/check-oil-level-zf-atf-style-gear/

Is this correct?

Thanks

Should be this one: ZF Marine 80IV/85IV Dip Stick

yes, its that easy. Just don't thread it in or you'll get a false reading.

The number you posted, ZF HSW 800 V1, is for an early Hurth transmission design before ZF bought Hurth, and all the dip sticks you posted in this site are incorrect.

https://www.sbmar.com/product-categ...rine-transmission-parts/zf-marine-dip-sticks/

If you have the older Hurth transmissions, the dipstick tube has no threads in it. It is a plain metal tube where the dipstick has a rubber plug that expands when you seat the dipstick and tighten the t-handle on the top of the dipstick the rubber plug expands and seals the tube and holds the dipstich in place. like this:

https://marinepartssource.com/trans...5cfsEywFYmCcGUYemJiBAop568o9lnRhoC1ScQAvD_BwE

note: this is not the correct dipstick for your transmissions; it is just a representative photo of what the Hurth dipstick should look like.

ZF later redesigned the 800-IV series into the 80/85-IV transmission. Its dipstick looks like this:

https://www.sbmar.com/product/zf-marine-80iv-85iv-dip-stick/

The top of the dipstick tube has threads in it to accept the threaded dipstick

If your missing dipstick for that transmission has no threads in the top of the dipstich tube, you need the old style dipstick without threads on it. If you have th e new transmission design, you need the plastic treaded dipstick.

If you need the old style version, I may have one in my shop in a transmission I replaced about 10 years ago.
