I was working on chaing the oil in my zf 208's yesterday. I was not able to get the nut off to clean the filter though. so I ended up filling the transmission with the clean oil. The problem with getting the nuts that hold the filters in seems to be that I didn't have a long enough wrench to get enough torque. it looks like the oil has never been changed as it came out pretty dirty. and none of the drain plugs look like they have ever had wrench on them.
My question is can I remove the filters with oil in the transmissions?
Or will all the new oil run out if I remove the filter nut?

Thanks,
Matt

Not familiar with your tranny. I can remove the filters with oil in mine but you may risk contamination in the bowl if the filters are bad.

I have the ZF63 however I found a company in SEA that sells filters for a fraction of the cost and they are very knowledgeable. Below, please find the link to their home page; MER marine

Yes you can remove the filter ( big aluminum nut) and not drain more than about 1-2 oz of oil..

How did you drain the fluid? My drain plug is in a bad place. On the starboard engine the suction screen is up against a stringer/rib and not enough room for it to even unthread from the gearbox. Can the fluid be siphoned out of the fill port rather than trying to drain it from the plug? I have an '07 44DB with Cummins 500QSC's. This is the first time to service the transmissions. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Sincerely,

alot of times on the ZF's you will find strainers and not filters, the strainers can easily be cleaned and re-installed and there is no need to replace unless you have a failure. the strainer is designed to catch the big stuff,
if you are having a hard time draining, pull the cooler line on the going out side and let it drain itself with the engine fired when it quits draining turn the engine off
