7.5L Ford, 460 OMC with King Cobra drives
Hello, I’m new to the club and restoring a 1976 SRV240. In 2009 it was repowered with a 454 OMC with a King Corba drive. I pulled the motor as it had a cracked block, repaired it, sounds and runs great. Before I put it back in I’m cleaning & painting the bilge/engine room. Any thoughts as to how the larger motor (300hp) will affect the performance due to the added weight? From what I can see and hear, transom and stringers are all sound. Thoughts on replacing to tank?

Thanks,

Looks like a 460 Ford big block, which makes sense since OMC used ford engines with their King Cobra drives.

Yes, a Ford. I just had to test my repair, i didn’t have any gaskets, so I rushed and did my DIY gaskets.

Perhaps change original post to reflect the ford. It says 454 engine , which is a GM.

Thanks for the info, my mistake. On the survey, it’s noted as a 7.5L OMC. I guess that’s a Ford 460 then?

Performance of the boat won't be affected - it will only get better.

Forget about HP - it's about torque.

The question, though, is whether or not the drive can handle it and for how long. I honestly don't know much about the OMC and KC drives since they have been non-existant for so many years. I "think" I remember hearing that there was an update to the KC along the way with beefier gears - otherwise the earlier version would eventually grenade with big block torque. If you're gentle on things, that could make a difference, though.

I suggest doing some more research on exactly which drive you have.

The next step, once you get it on the water, will be to play with props.

Thanks. The drive is for a 7.5L motor, so I’m assuming the gears should be able to handle it. I’m not one for gunning it, I enjoy cruising once on plane. Your right, I’ll need to play with the props once she is in she water.
