Year round boating – where is the line?

Dave S wrote I run with a CO monitor in the cockpit.

Where did you buy it?

It's a Kidde detector available just about anywhere for under 30 bucks. It's battery powered and looks like this. I bought mine at WalMart.

We are in Tampa and can boat year around. Not that we do in Jan or Feb, but we don't need to winterize the boat at all.

Presentation wrote WOW do I love the picture in your signature

it's not my signature pic yet, just one I added to my post taken by the same friend who tried to fill me with CO the night before....I've already complimented her repeatedly. Just wish she'd taken it in a huge format so I could crop, enlarge & print. While I'm wishing about enlarging...

It is a beautiful afternoon here. Temp about 60, sunshine, no wind. Would be a great day to take the boat out, but unfortunately it is broke. :smt089 New steering cable is in the mail.

BTW, the photo on the calendar for last month is of my boat at White Bluffs, WA, next to the Hanford site. The date of the trip was 2 Feb. 2005. It was a very nice day!

The boat ramp at our lake is closed from Nov 15-March 15. So as far as the lake we will be on, no choice. I think that is true for many ramps in CT in fresh water, or at least the town ramps?

Witht the cold coming, I dont think I'd go any later or earlier anyway. The winter and cold weather is perfect for all of the other fun things to do. I think I would get tired of boating if it was year round.

Happiness is a full pair of tanks, diesels purring below and a long rolling swell under the hull ...

Boating is not a hobby it is a lifestyle!

How do you know that? How long you been boating? You need to drink more kool aid.

Too many other things I like to do. I would crave for the other activities too much. Besides, it isnt like it is down further south with restaurants and places to go all year. Even so, I would long for the snow.

I'll comment on the Atlanta climate.
The trailer boats will usually winterize. Most all of the big boats stay in the water and some are used all year round. Then some of the owners prefer to winterize so they can walk away from the boat for a few months and not worry.

We had a couple days last year with a snow and ice in the Puget Sound area but boatings been a year-round hobby of ours.

I should really say 'mine' as my wife isn't too keen on boating unless sunscreen is part of the plan.

She can wear sunscreen. She just may not need it. But the smell of it may help?

If you never want to winterize again move to Florida south of the I-4 corridor. Oddly enough the I-4 interstate seem to be about the same latitude as the frost line. in the last seven years we have never had the temp drop below 32 degrees for more that an hour at the most before it jumped back up into the 50's or 60's agian.

now you'll also face the problem that after a couple of years down here you wont ever want to get in the water agian unless it's a least 80 degress.

We were at Disney World this year, January 26th to be exact. We were fine but the employees, excuse me, actors, were wearing long sleeved jackets and were literally shaking with the chills.

We all thought it was funny.

That's funny Doug. When we go to California wintertime and it's 60 degrees, they're all wearing jeans and jackets and I'm in a Tshirt and shorts

Well my line just moved a bit north. I'm taking the boat to Bald Head Island,N.C.(Southport) a bit north of Mrytle Beach.

I'm told they dont winterize there and that they just use the bilge heaters also. I'm just happy not to have to have the boat shrunkwrapped.

I will visit her throughout the winter and run her, so I wont winterize her just try the bilge heater route. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome, thanks.

A bilge heater and cabin heat should be sufficient to protect the engine and everything else. But check with the locals there since you might also have to drain any freshwater lines in your Lazarette or Cockpit since they could freeze. That's pretty much what I do with mine when I leave it in the water.

Thanks Dave, thats what I was hoping and I will talk to the locals. The dockmaster said they only turn off the dock water for about 2 weeks. The xtreme bilge heater looks like will fit the bill.(thanks Gary)

That reminds me. When you get there be sure to pump out out your holding tank as well. In addition to shutting off water, they usually winterize the pump out stations so they are not operative either. An empty holding tank may get you thru the winter with just occasional usage but I suppose you could use your Macerator if you had to. Also ask your dockmaster if there is a place where you can get water for your water tank when they turn off water at the docks. If not, top up your water tank as well.
