I have always heard that Yanmar tractors were tough little tractors. How about the Yanmar marine diesels? Anyone have any experience? Was looking at a Cruisers Yachts MY that had twin Yanmars.

If you had to change out an oil pan or pull an engine, how in the world would you remove it from a MY?

Thanks,
Bennett

Need more info. Looked at a Cruisers MY a couple of years ago. It had Volvos. Too many GPH and as stated, how do you remove them for repair...... Look at all aspects of the equation.

I've owned several MYs from different manufacturers and in each boat there was a way to pull the engine built in to the design. Generally the solution is removable deck plates in the salon that, when removed, provide a path above each engine. The only time I had occasion to use the capability involved the need to replace a transmission. The mechanical shop took out the deck plates and erected a frame above the engine with a hoist. The rest went as you would expect. They did not have to pull the engine completely out but they could have. I don't think the cost was too much different than what a similar job on a boat with an engine room not directly open to the sky would have cost. I did have to replace the salon carpet. The shop guys knew exactly what to do and had a drawing from the manufacturer that showed the arrangement for engine repair or removal like where to erect the frame.

Having said the above, I certainly agree, if you're interested in the MY style, that you determine in advance of purchase what might be needed in the case of a major repair.

Yanmar diesels have a good reputation in sailboat applications. But, a friend had to replace his engines in a SeaRay (40DA I believe) and used larger Yanmars. I think the engines worked fine but he had a devil of a time selling the boat when he moved up and believes that the "novelty" of the replacement hurt him in the market.
