Wow, that's a big motor! Wonder how many gallons it burns in an hour?

I'm curious about a comment the article's author made, though -- he says ship owners prefer one engine and one prop. I would think multiple engines would be desireable from a reliability/redundancy standpoint -- especially in an ocean-going vessel?

Article says 1,660 gallons per hour at most efficient speed. I calculate over 3,000 if running at max hp cruise. So that means the ship owner is looking at $5,000-$10,000 per hour for fuel. When you consider how many box cars are loaded and the revenue generated, it's no wonder that there are so many rich tycoons in the large-scale, international shipping business.

Not anymore ... Let me correct that:

MAN B&W 14K98MC 14 cylinder engine of their MC series two stroke marine diesels makes 87,220 kw, which equals 118,620 hp at 97 rpm mind you !!!

In addition to the fuel consumption of 300lbs./hr. it also consumes 7-12 kg of lubricating oil per cylider per 24 hrs.
