Our grandparents grew up accustomed to manual labor. Can you see all those unemployed investment bankers with tools in hand, building a road or a cabin in a national park? I can't.

The manual labor workers who may otherwise lose their jobs in the auto industry are likely to have their jobs 'saved' by Congress, so they won't have to take WPA-type jobs.

re: all those bankers doing manual labor. Well, that's what Hitler did, and it was tough for the first 4 months or so they said for the business people, since back then, Germany didn't have the machines to help build the Autobahn. People were digging with shovels and picks. After a number of years, they started getting steam shovels and bulldozers involved, but initially, it was a hardship.

Maybe if they knew what it was like to do manual labor, they may have made wiser investments.
