Any of you have this, seen it, worked with, etc?
We are closing on our newer home in a month and would liek to have some wood flooring installed before we move in.
Went to a custom mill where we really started to like this quartered and rift white oak. We love the flecks and rays that the cut produces
Can't decide between 3" or 4" planks either....Overall coverage would be 1200sft over a couple rooms. House has regular height ceilings with good light.
Thoughts..pics?

I would go with the smaller planks....the wider the boards are, the more they will expand/contract with the changes of the summer/winter humidity

Thanks...Thats what we were thinking too...Wider planks seem to giving more of a country style which we are not.

Was wondering if anyone has seen a room/house done with the type of cut ----Quarter sawn and rift seems to be really unique

We have quarter sawn white oak floors through out our house. I ordered white instead of red which is more common, thinking that it would be lighter in color. I'm not sure that is the case as the red looks pretty similar to my eye. Quarter sawing is supposed to wear better although solid oak floors wear like iron. We just had our floors refinished a year ago after maybe 30 years of doing nothing more than swiffering them. I was surprised by how much the color had changed over the years. They are now back to the original very light color. Our planks are not quite 3" wide and the seams do open a little bit in the winter when the house dries out from the many fires we light in our fire place; and they close up in the summer. The seams are not objectional to look at but they do widen beginning this time of the year.

I think quartersawn white oak is beautiful but honestly I would think hard on having the whole house with the identical flooring throughout, especially a hard flooring. Too much of something really nice can sometimes be too much. It can be hard on the feet, etc but you may be young enough that it's not a concern.

It can give the wife many options to change decorating schemes by the use of area rugs, runners and associated furniture changes if the budget is ok with that.

Thanks for the feedback...we are early 30's so the hardness is what we are looking for due to a little one.
It is not really the whole house but much of the first floor....Includes entry/foyer, dining room, great room(23x16) hallway, office, and master. There is the kitchen, eat in area of the kitchen and sun-room that will be tiled.
