I am new to the board and just purchased a 2001 Sea Ray 182 after owning jet skis for the last 5 years. My wife and I had a baby so the days of the jet skis came to an end. The Boat is in pretty good condition and they previous owner owned it sense it was new and lost interest in it the last few years. He said he had it started over the weekend but when I went to pick it up we couldn't get it started. He thinks it is the starter but I cant tell. I have posted a video of me trying to start it. Any help is appreciated.

Hard to tell from the short video/sound... but first guess would be battery, not starter.

Welcome to CSR!

Thanks for the welcome, I thought it could be the starter too but it sounds nothing like a dead battery in a car. Also the radio and all other electrical components still work.

Water in he engine was my next guess but he said he had it started over the weekend and it sat in his garage. I understand what he said and what the truth may be could be two totally different things.

Started over the weekend on muffs then shut it down and the water seeped into a cylinder. It could happen. Hard to tell from the audio in the vid.

could be a bad starter slave solenoid....easy to check and easy to replace if needed...a search of the archives in this forum for 'slave solenoid' should give you some good reading....very common problem....

Try a jump start with cables from your car. Almost sounds like dirty battery connections -CLEAN THEM- or a weak battery.

Thanks for the responses ill let you know what I figure out tonight after work.

Turns out the guy before me had the wrong starter in the boat along with the wrong bolts for a starter. It didn't do any damage to the flywheel that I can see but I also pulled the plugs and they were shot. I checked the battery and it will work for now but it shouldn't be what was causing the problem. I am getting a little worried now what else he did half a$$ed on the boat. Hopefully I can get it started tomorrow night and find out what else is wrong with it.

please be sure to replace the starter with a marine grade starter that is ignition protected....

I ended up replacing the starter and plugs. I had the boat serviced at a local dealer and fluids serviced. We ended up taking the boat out over the weekend and putted around for a while the put it in full throttle. About 2 min we quickly lost power and oil pressure. I was towed in and checked the oil. When I opened the cap smoke came out and the oil was dry. When I pulled the drain plug out after trail erring the boat I had quite a bit of oil come out. The engine also made a knocking sound when I shut it down. I have a feeling it spun a bearing or something. My biggest question is if I just had the oil changed why was it black? Any help is greatly appreciated again.
