I think I checked everything. I am not getting any spark to points. Cleaned all connections and still nothing. The motor was running one minute and nothing the next.....Any suggestions?

Checked all wiring. Cleaned all connections. How do I know if coil is bad?.. Also one thing I forgot. I have to cross the solenoid to get to crank. I have power at ignition but won't crank motor at start position. I disconnected neutral safety switch and still nothing...

I think you just answered your own question..... Bad solenoid. If your crossing over it and she turns over, that would be the place to start

I think I worded it wrong. Two different problems. I use a screwdriver at solenoid to get motor to turn over. That's because when I turn key it doesn't crank. All power works when key is on accessories. Light, gauges, radio, and everything else.

Next problem. When it turns over I am not getting spark at points...

Could they be related. Not normally. Am I wrong?

Start with what you know. If your jumping the solenoid to get it to start , replace it. Than work on points.

Did you check the gap on the points?

Do you have a "kill switch/lanyard" at the helm or attached to the throttle/gear selector? If so, is it in the off position (may have gotten bumped) or has it become disconnected on the back side?

I do not have a kill switch at helm nor at the throttle control...But I did disconnect the neutral safety switch thinking it might be a bad connection. That didn't do it..

Yes. Also no spark at points..

Thanks guys. I will keep you guys posted tomorrow after work. I will do a few more things with tester...

I think I would verify that there is power from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid when the ignition is turned to start position. Speaking of solenoids...do you have a slave solenoid in the ignition circuit? If so a faulty one could account for your starter problem and a lack of juice to the coil during startup. I don't know your boats system but what you describe sounds like thee above.

Thanks Woody. You know come to think about it I know that my Searay 270 has one. The motor that I am trying to start is in my Sunbird. I want to get it running again before I pull it to get it ready for The Searay...By the way, did you pick up the Sundancer? Let me know..

I've seem many starters/starter solenoids blamed for ignition switch/wiring problems, it's $worth$ it to check this easy stuff first. TMAIN I'm not sure what you mean by "did you pick up the Sundancer" but I would sure like to pick up a different one and am about to start the shopping process...next season I hope to be burning some diesel and have a few more feet between me and my grandkids.

Verify B+ at the coil with the ignition in the run position, then verify B+ at the coil with the ignition in the crank position and verify it at the starter as well. What you find will determine your next steps.

What is B+ ?
