With all the boats being totaled...

99Percent of the boats that are totalled out will most likely be auctioned off. Ins. Companys usually dont like to fool around with parting them out. Cost them to much money to store them and have somebody suspervise the dismanteling.

What would a storm damaged, late 80s / early 90 270/280/290 go for? I'm obviously asking for very ball park figures :)

The thought occurs to me I may well have a pair of recon'd engines on my hand soon and I have access to sparky skills - possible to import, replace storm damaged engines, tidy up electrical and I'd still be able to show a profit here? Maybe.

Before I got Into the union I was working for a friend that owns junk yards. I was the one who did the auction buying. Auction rules for tri state area(not sure about everywere else) are 1 cash in hand or backround check of bank acount and you must pay in full before leaving that day 2 you must be a dmv certified dealer. Again this is for cars not sure if boats are similiar. As for going prices a totaled car (visible damage) they usually bring anywere from 2-10 percent depending on how bad the damage is. A flooded car (compaired to a flooded boat) would bring anywere from less then 1 to up to 40 percent depending on the value of the body parts. About 6 years ago when I was doing th auctions I would walk out with 5-8 high end cars (bmw mercedez audi ect) for a little under 10k. Recently I went with my friend to the auctions and he left with 3cars for 15k. The auctions arnt what they use to be. A lot of them went international over the net so prices went soaring. Not to mention the auction fees went through the roof. My friend is taking a huge hit in the junk and used/salvage car business because of these auctions bringing so much money. Just make sure you keep in mind shipping (witch also went way way up) and auction fees. Best of luck to u

I do projects for fun and went to several auctions on the Gulf coast after storms. One thing I learned is that there is absolutely no telling what a salvaged boat will bring..........until the auctioneer says sold. You just have to show up with cash in your pocket and see.

If parts are available from storm damaged boats, it is only after the entire boat is auctioned or scrapped. There is no way to "catch" one that is an insurance total before it is auctioned.

Does anyone know who to contact to maybe buy some parts from the totaled boats? I am looking for a forward hatch for the late 80's Sundancer that is in working condition.

Have you tried fpmarine.com?

the only bad part of the car/boat/rv auctions is they are purely "what you see is what you get"
and they really don't let you look.
from what I understand (right or wrong) many insurance companies auction by the lot in cases like this
with many totals...not selling individual units.
went to a "antique car auction" years ago...basically it was a scrap salvage auction sold a 1/4 acre at a time
had to buy 30 tons of trash to get 1 semi-useable core car.....it was awful to watch untouched 1920s and 30s cars
go straight to the mobile crusher for weight because it wasn't worth bidding on 50 cars to get 1 or 2.

You can bid on storm damaged boat in the 12/18/12 auction.
All bidding is done online so buyers can bid from computer or mobiles device anywhere. The sealed bid auction system provides Real-Time feedback on bids and during the final minutes before each auction lot closes - the lots are automatically refreshed to give a second-by second countdown. Auction end times are extended if bids are placed in the last few minutes and is designed to give every buyer an equal opportunity to purchase regardless of their computer speed or internet connection. A Watchlist delivers a list of auction lots for tracking open, closed, won, and lost lots.
