Well, I do my own winterizing but I just had my boat in the shop to replace port side trim sender unit. So, I was talking to the guy on what he chargers per motor to winterize. He charges $200 a motor, and plus he charges you for a fuel filter. He doesn't pull the thermostat and replace it, he basically runs the motors with a cocktail mix in the fuel filter for 15 minutes in a dunk tank.

So, what kind of prices are other people seeing out there to winterize a motor? $200 for a single motor with no thermostat change or anything seems like a lot of profit in my book. I spent about $42 on the marine antifreeze and that got me about 16 gallons of it. I used this for both motors and the fresh water system and the a/c. Fuel filter was like $8 dollars, 2 stroke motor oil was like $4 and the fuel stabilizer was like $9.

It just seems like a lot of profit to their pocket.

Oil change he told me was $65 a motor plus labor.

Change drive lube was like $60 plus labor.

What would you charge to do this work on someone else's boat, if you had to do it for a living? don't forget your insurance costs, utility costs, building costs, tools, time, taxes, etc... Oh yeah, you have to eat, mortgage, car, gas, cable bill, etc...

1/3 parts, 2/3 labor seems about right. Live and let live. I don't begrudge anyone trying to make a buck but for routine stuff, they ain't making that buck off of me!

I say the same thing to my dentist. "What? give me that scraper, i'll do it myself. $500 to scrap my teeth... what's this scraper cost? $2?"

I resent those remarks you two!

Mike I'd like to watch you scrape your own teeth! Oh, and the scrapers cost around $20 each. Go ask any anthropoligist.

I was wondering where all my dentist buds were hiding on this one!

Just got my contract today.

I am planning on doing all of the winterizing myself except for the engines.
Changed oil and filters in both engines and generator last weekend.
Added Sta-bil for Ethanol in both tanks.
Approx $85.00
Did another guys boat at the same time and he paid for my oil, filters and Sta-bil.

Doing A/C and water systems with Hot Water Takn bypassed this weekend.
Approx cost $30.00 in RV Anti-Freeze.

Doing the same other guys boat at same time for cost of anti-freeze and dinner out, possible case of Miller Lite thrown in.
Doesn't get much betteer than that!

Yard wants $125.00 per engine.
Feel that is very fair.

Dan

Thanks for the feedback on what you other guys are seeing on winterizing pricing. I just felt like $200 a motor with them not even touching the thermostat was a little steep.

Maybe one of these days I will make the big bucks where I don't have to scrape the old knuckles up during winterizing to save myself a few hundred bucks.

My guy charges $200 for the engine and $250 for the "deluxe" service on the BIII. He removes the drive, checks alignment, lubes everything, and changes the fluid.

I do the engine myself but let him service the drive. The engine is actually quite easy since I have closed cooling and all I really have to do is put the fogging oil in the fuel filter and run her till she dies, rain the seawater side, and change the oil.

Then, there's another $250 for the shrink wrap.

 good comparison.

It is around $300 here give or take for a single engine...they change drive fluid and engine oil, stabilize fuel, fog the engine, put anti freeze/anti corrosion in the engine block, disconnect the battery. There may be one or two small items Im missing.

My bud ("slacker" on this site)and I were JUST discussing doing it ourselves this year at his house, but Im opting for having the marina do it, just because it is one less frikkin thing I have to do!
