Hello all,
I am in thinking about installing a windlass on my 1992 230S.D. and have never used or seen one in action. If anyone has installed one or has any ideas on installing one on a boat that doesnt have one then I am all ears.

I've never installed one, but researched it previously.
Check out the amperage requirements on the unit that you are considering, and the required wire size, which may increase depending on the length required.
Windlasses draw major amperage, and need heavy cables for wiring, (picture a starter motor), and are usually wired directly from the battery, with their own circuit breaker.
Good luck,

I have installed a couple of windlasses and as stated above, it's no simple project. You will need to run some very heavy cable the length of the boat in most cases.

I owned the same boat as you (93 230DA) and as I recall, the biggest problem you will have is the anchor locker door. The windlass needs to be located over the deepest part of the locker. On the 230, this would necessitate mounting it directly on the door. You would then need to install some support (ie lumber) under the door to thru-bolt the windlass to. This support would have to extend well beyond the door as far fore and aft as possible.

It's not an impossible job - that is how I installed one on my 270. But I had a little more locker and hull to work with than you would.
