Went to the marina today after receiving a call that a storm hit us pretty hard last night. I found the chain and rope unwound from my windlass. I went aboard and hit the dash switch to pull in the rope, and while the windlass was dead, the vent window started opening halfway. I closed the vent window using the vent switch. Tried the windlass again and the same thing happened. Tried the foot switch and still nothing. Wires and breakers appear okay.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, sounds like lightning damage to your EIM. You should check out all of your systems and contact your insurance company.

I agree that lightning is most likely the culprit since 3 feet of the bow extends out from under the covered slip. I did check it yesterday for any sign of a direct hit but saw none--which is certainly not conclusive. I have plans today to give it a good going over and see what works and what does not.

As for the insurance, my $5K deductible will most likely assure the repairs are on me. Is there a standard procedure for testing the EIM?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the heads up! I will give everything a good going over and should know more this evening.

I am starting to think I should have decided on a smaller deductible on my insurance.

Update: The engines crank and seem to run okay, though it seemed they had to warm up for several minutes before they would take any gas without dying.

Dash switches seem to be cross-shorted to operate other items on the dash circuit (i.e., turning on the radio switch results in the nav and anchor lights coming on). Guess I should plan on replacing the EIM ?

Of course, the windlass remains dead. Also, I noticed in the rope storage compartment there was a seal laying on top the rope and gear oil everywhere. Not sure what happened there but hope it didn't short out and run to the point of burning up the windlass. Thoughts?
