I want to mount an ipad to my dash, but I don't really want to drill any holes. There is a lot of mention on CSR about using a SeaSucker mounting system for tablets, but I can't determine if it will suck onto the textured part of the dash on my 1999 400 DA Sundancer. If not, where are people putting this?

Thanks,

Pete

I have one, but it suctions onto my dash which is smooth, it is very strong you almost can't pull it off. If it doesn't grab the textured dash as well as you'd hoped how about the side windshield and bend it to your sight line?

I'm no familiar with SeaSucker but Ram Mounts sells a smooth plastic disc that can attached with double sided adhesive tape to rough surfaces. You then attach the suction cup on the mount to the disc.

In my experience, the SeaSucker needs a flat non-matted finish (such as on smooth gelcoat) to stay stuck. It may temporarily stick to a textured surface, but it will not stay and I definitely wouldn't trust such a surface for mounting anything with a SeaSucker.

I use a 6in sea sucker on my textured dash. It will hold for a day at most then it gives out. They have the orange band so you can see it losing its grip 1 or 2 pump s and it holds.

I wet the edges and that helps get a quick grip.

I am sure on a smooth surface it will hold for days.

I use it to hold my iPad it is awesome teamed up with an otterbox case it's nice.

I'd echo what others have said. I've used my Sea Sucker for the IPAD for 3+ years and have always used it on a smooth surface. I've tried to use it on textured surfaces and it doesn't adhere as well or as long. One time I had the suction break loose on plane after hitting a wave while mounted on a textured surface--had to catch my IPAD while controlling the boat simultaneously. It wasn't fun because I didn't want to lose either. I've used it on a smooth surface ever since then, albeit off to the side.

Another option that a friend of mine uses is mounting the Sea Sucker sideways on the Stbd window just in front of the steering wheel. Both options allow connection of the DC powercoord at the helm.

My thoughts/suggestions....

Well I bought one and highly recommend it. It does a great job and is very heavy duty. It doesn't reliably stick to the textured dash, though I think it would if you smeared some silicone grease on it. However, I found a smooth place next to the throttles that works great.

For those who are willing to drill : http://www.tallonsocket.com/

Very nice "detachable" system - I have scattered a few around my boat :) And they work with my RAM mounts - for more or less any kind of attachment.

I really like the clean look of this systen, worth looking into! I'm looking for a way to mount the iPad on the cockpit wall when at anchor so I have control of the music without going to the bridge, this mount may be the solution thanks for the info

Hi Pete,

i'm in Abu Dhabi :) Close to the F1 track - and he is most welcome ! I actually live in the harbour - and boat is about 10 meters away - so I'm very lucky  and we moved in when people thought it would be a terrible place to live (as in NOT ON Abu Dhabi Island) - so relatively speaking we got a great deal and we love to live where we do now. We have been in the UAE for 8 years now - 4 years in Dubai - and now 4 in Abu Dhabi.
