Will a through hull transducer work on my 340AJ?

The tranducer went out on my depth finder and in order to avoid hauling the boat to replace it I'm thinking of using a though hull transucer. I called Garmin and they say it will work, but Searay says although it is not a cored hull it is to thick to an in-hull transducer to work well.

Is anyone using a through hull tranducer on there Searay.

FWIW I used through hull transducers on my 290 and on my 330, they both worked very well. I don't know about hull thickness compared to your 340, but I would imagine the 330 would be close??
I just made sure to place them in a spot that I knew the hull wasn't built up, and made sure to get a complete epoxy seal under and around the bottom edge of it.
I used the through hull on the 330 for about 7 years, and it was going strong when I sold the boat. It is visible in this ER photo on the hull bottom under the starboard engine alternator, the cream colored epoxy dam is visible around it.
I used a narrow cone angle transducer, if I remember right, and plugged it in to the existing depth unit on the boat.

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to give it try. The transducer is only $100 and thats far less than hauling out and putting in through hull if it works.
 
FYI, just as "my3sons" stated, make sure you glue it in properly and find a good location before permenantly mounting it. The transducer placed in a zip lock baggie full of water is a good way to find a gluing location. Connect the transducer to the unit (just lay cable across deck) and with it in the bag of water, move it around inside your engine compartment bilge to find a good location. When located, mark it, scuff the gelcoat/bilge coat up with sandpaper or grinder and then epoxy the transducer down. Make sure no air voids are between the transducer, hull, and epoxy. Leaving the transducer on while glueing it down will tell you if you have any of these voids. Usually, the "---" on the display will indicate bad location or air void.
After the epoxy has dried, unplug the transducer from the display and route the cable and secure it with zip ties. Have fun:)

I got the tranducer installed and it works great. Had it out last weekend and even at cruising speed and a heavy chop no problems at all.
 
Is the transducer you installed just for depth, or for a fishfinder as well? What transducer # was it?

The transducer works fine on the fish finder, I did lose temp and speed. I ordered it off of the Garmin site it's Airmar P79 part number # 010-10327-00. If you find there outlet store link it's cheaper than regular site. Not sure how I got there.
 
Thanks. I may give the P79 a try. Garmin's site made it sound like the P79 wouldn't shoot through a hull as thick as a 290 or 340, and the next in hull option is $$$.
