There's been a few posts here about how often to check & tighten things like clamps, wire connections, hose condition. I have stated that I check as many clamps & wire connections that I can reach usually I'll check the battery side the next time out I'll check the opposite side some folks thought this was overkill.

I was at the boat the other day adding some drive fluid after the drive had been pulled last year it was down about 1/2" so I started checking some hose clamps there always seems to be one loose the 2nd clamp snapped without any pressure on it. This was on the exhaust elbow there's a good reason for 2 clamps.
Make sure your clamps are in good condition this was a Mercruiser clamp 4 years old.

I ordered all new clamps for both sides.

Thanks for the reminder!

Good suggestion, thanks!

What does checking the clamps mean? Most folks only feel they’re tight if they can get a ‘little more’ usually by turning a little harder. I check mine once a season. I use my magic torque wrench wrist, if nothing gives at the normal torque they’re tight, I don’t apply more force.

In places that a particular clamp seems to always get loose replace it, maybe with a different style clamp. Where there’s a lot of expansion/contraction I’ve been switching to a constant torque type clamp like these, belleville washers keep the tension on the clamp.

As well as checking them I also can spares. What if the clamp gave out while you were out miles from shore?

Yep I put one of my spares on it. I also ordered a new set for the exhaust elbows I'll need them in a couple months when the elbows will be inspected or replaced.

That clamp just fell off when I touched it with the socket.

I use 1/4" drive ratchet with a 5/16" deep socket to check tightness, since there is no torque spec for clamps just follow the manual's spec securely.

I also take a screw driver and check all the bonding strip screws.
