Two of our kids (actually one of ours and his girlfriend) live in West Seattle and have a home that overlooks the shipping channel that runs through there. Not only is there a lot of ship traffic, but there is a lot of pleasure boat traffic that cruises there.

GW and I don't know anything about telescopes but we bought them a telescope for Christmas. It turned out to be a piece of junk so we returned it to the store. Now I want to replace it with something that's useable for their situation, but still don't know what to buy.

Here's how they will use it:
--the distances will be less than 10 miles most of the time, but they can see Mt. Rainier from there house so may occasionally look at it.
--the one we bought inverted the picture we were viewing so everything was upside down. We'd like to do away with that if possible.

We'd like to keep the prices for the telescope and tripod below $200.

So, you telescope users and voyeurs, what would you recommend? Brand? Power? ETC?

A star scope will usually not work - since they turn picture upside down - and is "setup" for quite low brightness images

With some yes, not all. The Celestron I posted will do the job that is needed.
Erect image optics - Ideal for terrestrial and astronomical use
