First off let me apologize if this a duplicate thread im on my phone and my search-fu is off tonight. Now onto the question at hand.

Who got you into boating?

That would have been my grandpa. Always referred to as Bimps. When i was first born he had a 28' cabin cruiser which he would go from point breeze ny to toronto and back again. Sadly i dont remember much of that boat other than from pictures and stories told to me.

When i was 4 he sold the cruiser and got a 19' cuddy which he could pull us on skis the disc or tubes. That is the boat i remember most.

We lived 7 houses down from my grandpa. He would hook the trailer upto his mid 80's station wagon and come down blowing the horn. During the summer my sister and i would almost live in our bathing suits. We'd go running sometimes telling mom other times she saw the boat pulling away and the house was quiet.

Bimps gave each of us a small list of prep work to be done at the staging area. He always double checked our work and i know he did but he never let on to us until we were older. Every time we'd do something different weather it was the plug, undoing straps, unhooking lights, etc.

As he got older we would do more and more, i took over cleaning and buffing the boat one summer, next summer was learning about the engine and outdrive. And so on until the day we motored out of the harbor and he looked at me got up and moved to passengers chair. He turned the helm of his baby over to me for a day.

After sitting in dry dock for two years he finally sold the boat which was back in early 2000's.

I bought a small runabout and the sea ray srv 24' weekender that will be getting restored now that i talked to my admiral. (We figured out how to keep it so i have a project) my plan was to get the runabout in the water this year, which it will be once i get the new outboard, and get him back on the water. Even had guys lined up to help lift him into and out of the boat.

Sadly he entered into his final rest and is sailing the big blue with my grandma. He entered rest in dec of 2011. I still miss him everyday. My first splash of this season will be dedicated to him.

This is a great question. It has really made me think.

I'm pretty sure it was the spirit of my grandfather.

My Dad took me on a sailing trip from Toronto to Hamilton one year. I was 8. Then when I was 11, we visited friends who put me on their skiff with a hopped up 9.9 Johnson to buzz around the lake. Probably a good thing to get me away from fighting with my younger sister!

In my early teens, along came a 14 foot skiff. Dad wanted to learn to sail. I taught him! After a humbling experience of flipping the boat he sold it. But not until I'd won a few regatta's on my own.

Fast forward to my 30s & a buddy had a 27.7 Doral Monticello....I used it!

3 boats later over the last 10 years, we now have a Sea Ray 370 Sundancer.

My Grandfather? Never met him...he died long before I came along. BUT...he was a merchant seaman. As a matter of fact, so was my great grandfather..but on my mom's side!

Thanks for asking me which made me write this!

Great thread...

Mark

My dad, I started boating when I was 6 months old....although I guess really you could argue all I did was sleep on a boat for like the first year and a half.

My Dad.....1st boat was 14' with 40hp in 1964, Mike.

Kohrah, thanks for the great story!

With that said, my husband! We got OUR first boat three years ago.
My husband grew up on and around boats and then he joined the Coast Guard.

To this day nobody in my family understands where I got the boating bug from. No family member ever owned a boat. 8 yrs old, back in '63 our neighbor Mr. Wells had a wood Owens 28' cabin cruiser. We were invited on trips up the Hudson and campng on the shores (back when there was open land). That was it, I was hooked. Next, new friends in college, one had an 18' Glasstron tri-hull that we would cruise arround Manhattan (back in the day when you had to duck the bottles being thrown at you from the bridges over the Harlem river), later, a friend had a 30' Oday sailboat. Finally, in '88, working, I bought my first boat at the NY show. A Barretta 205 cuddy cabin for $15K including trailer. 24 years and 6 boats later (the last 4 since 2004 all Sea Rays) and I'm still hooked on the lifestyle, and continue to fight the "itis" ich..A loosing battle. Wow I can't even remember what $15K will buy now, maybe fuel!

BUT WELL WORTH IT...Thanks Mr. Wells

My step-dad introduced me to boating... early sat mornings to hit lake Conroe in his Champion Bass boat. He finally started pulling us kids on ski's knee boards as long as we would shut up long enough for him to fish for a couple of hours.

After I joined the service, i only rented a pantoon boat here and there.. nothing serious until the Admiral part 2 and our brood of 8 kids (2 out the door now). I made a craigs list ad jokingly 'trading 1600 Vulcan for cuddy cabin boat' ... wouldnt you know it... within 3 days a guy replied, and now I have a boat and he has a bike. I totally couldnt believe him when he said boats were expensive.....

I became interested in boating all on my own at a young age. I believe my father saw that, and he bought us a small used boat. It was a 1974 14' Glastron with a 50hp Johnson. I was thrilled and have been boating ever since.

Thank you all for your stories and answers. I wrote this last night never expecting anyone to answer. It was my way of helping to heal myself and keep the memories alive for me.

Hope everyone enjoys their boating season. Also remember those that got you into boating that are no longer with us are still right there beside you.

Kohrah, that is a great story. Thanks for sharing it.

In the 80's my dad set out restoring a turquoise blue early 60's boat with tail fins. It was dated, and the motor pretty far gone, so he traded for a bright red mint condition 1973 15' Chrysler Sport Satellite with a Johnson outboard. It had enough go to ski and play on the water. It was always a lot of fun, and I got to take it out a few times myself when I could drive a car. (Pretty nice dad, or crazy, depending on your point of view). Loved it enough to buy a boat for my family.

Your grandfather was a neat guy.

My wife wanted a camper & the kids wanted a pool, I bought a boat & everyone is happy.

Power boating?, Walt Costa, he wanted a way from his wife to go fishing. I bought an older 17' Bayliner. I've lived on the James all my life, and never more than 10 minutes away from it! 17 to a 19 to a jet ski, then to a 26' SeaRay.... Loved that boat! Now 30' Weekender.

My father, he told me if I was going to catch a man, I should do it from a boat......still casting..:)...lots of sucker fish out there lol
