Who goes offshore? How far? Size of boat?

In my 310, I do go out, but 3 to 5 miles out on really calm days.... only to get around quicker.

I pointed east and cruised at 30 knots for an hour until I saw no land and only whales. That was a nice $250 excursion

Sounds neat. How far offshore? Did you start in Boston or from Cape Cod?

Followed the high speed whale watch ferry out from Boston Harbor to Stellwagon bank. Upon passing Boston Light we continued at 30 knots for an hour. It was 35 miles east of Boston Light and 15-20 miles north of Provincetown. Plenty of whales. It was a nice flat ride.

That sounds pretty sick. We boat out of Falmouth, so we've never been up towards Boston by boat. Do you think it would be too much big ocean for our (not-so-big) boat?

Yes, on most days, but on some rare days it is like pond out there.

You can never predict what any day will bring, but if you venture 10 minutes out into Buzzard's Bay and it strikes fear in your heart, you won't make it to Boston. I'd say Buzzard's Bay is the worst leg of the trip, but it can be snotty going from the canal to Boston. It is a long journey, so you have to have a lot of stamina. The wakes in the canal will toss you pretty good.

Interesting, I would expect the last leg (after the Canal, north to Boston), to be the worst in terms of high seas. Anyway, we boat in Buzzards Bay quite a bit actually... for a short time to get to Cuttyhunk, as well as just to cruise around. We've been lucky with conditions in Buzzards Bay... have never seen it too choppy.

Probably won't even attempt to get to Boston until we upgrade again , but how long of a ride is it?

We had one bad experience in Buzzards Bay, beyond Cuttyhunk.... We tried to make it to Sakonnet Point, Rhode Island, and got a few miles past Cuttyhunk, only 12 miles from Rhode Island, but we had to turn back because of the conditions. It was nasty. The swells beyond Cuttyhunk were at least 15 feet. I've never experienced that before.. never again.

Not too bad. Farthest we've gone has been Nantucket. Pretty easy trip... I just don't like the shoals in the middle. :smt009

Any shoals on the way up to Boston?

We are regularly at least 40 miles offshore in the Gulf for fishing. Unfortunately, you have to go that far to find water over 100' deep off the West coast of Florida.

I have a 100 gallon bladder that we use (safety margin) when going 80 miles +/- to hit the best fishing grounds.

When cruising up and down the coast, we'll opt to skip the ICW and run outside about 3 miles or more offshore. This is to avoid crab pots and traffic.

Anyone who makes the jump from Marco Island to Key West (about 88 miles) will find themselves approximately 34 miles offshore when they complete half of the trip.

15-20 miles out for me - can't see land but do get to the fish. Mahi are typically 10-15 miles out for me but we also go to a place called the 102 Tower which is ~22 miles out of Oregon Inlet. Good fishing there - can get a little rough though.

I regularly go 60-70 miles one way, but that is inside Prince William Sound. Going out to Montague Island is a round trip of about 200 miles, but you have to be careful of the tides. The wind blowing in off the Gulf of Alaska or off the glaciers can get pretty nasty and cause you to hold up in a bay.

This all done in a 20' aluminum boat with a jet pump. The reason I have upgraded to a SR.

All good questions. A string within a string. Don't want to hijack this one. Maybe start a new one?
