I feel like a noob asking this but truthfully I am! I have tried to remove this white film and it just keeps coming back right away. I’ve used babes boat wax cleaner and also just tried Starbrite hull cleaner.

I was told the previous owner left the boat in the water a lot and that this will come off but can someone tell me what this is exactly and how do I remove this?

is this what is called oxidation? There’s also small scratches. I just want to make it look the best I can. I know it’s not new but it’s new to me.

Thanks for the help!

The thinner white lines look like scratches. The wider ones look like rub marks from a fender or dock rail. The white stuff at the bottom of the hull in the 1st pic looks like dried minerals from water line staining.

I would try using some compound for gel coat. My go-to is Smoove Pro-Cut 1000 on a wool cutting pad on a rotary buffer. It's a diminishing compound that breaks down to a very fine polish via the heat of the wool pad. Easy stuff to use and very effective.

That's not oxidation. Looks more like simple "water line" scum... Ring around the boat. Lot's of things can work - On & Off hull cleaner should definitely work - it's muriatic acid so be careful. But it's relatively cheap and very effective. Works in seconds. If it's mineral based as Brad mentioned, try CLR, too.

The larger, wider white mark further up looks more like dock/bumper transfer. Meaning, it may not be an actual scratch. Guess what would probably work on that, too? :) You could also try some naptha, acetone, mineral spirits, Goof Off, Goo Gone...

Possibly the thinner lines are transfer, too... give the chemicals a shot. If not, depending on how deep they are, wet sand and/or compound.

Ok thanks, I will look into that. I figured some elbow grease would make it disappear but that hasn’t worked. It’s a one owner boat but I feel like maybe they just didn’t clean it like they should? I know it’s 12 yrs old but I feel like it should look nicer. The dealership told me they left it in the water all the time.

ok thanks! I just sprayed star brite hull cleaner on it and let it sit for 2 minutes like it said and sprayed it off and it did nothing. I guess I will look at other products. I ordered some boat scuff erasers for other marks so I hope those will help also.

I wasn't aware that On & Off came in a spray. Is that what you used or something different? Wait on the scuff things - sounds like sandpaper. Like the Mr. Clean "Magic" erasers... they're not magic - they're sandpaper.

the hull cleaner I used is starbrite. It may have actually done something not sure I will test it more tomorrow after work. I only sprayed a small area to see what would happen.

OK, I've never used that so I can't comment.

I usually just go right to something I know is going to work the first time.

Yeah. You're going to need something to break the minerals down. Probably need to compound off.

These 3 are as simple as rub on with a sponge and rinse off, you will feel it take the growth off. My friends are so thankful that i turned them on to it. Both thought they had ruined their hulls.... I would save the compound till after i did this.... this is EZ

Mary Kate’s works good but a little harsh , need gloves, well ventilated and make sure to keep water on the concrete so that it dilutes if you have some spillage
Get the gel if you can. keep off your trailer too.I put the gel in a bucket, use gloves and hope it’s windy, I also have a fan when I am underneath the boat. Sponge on, rinse off... amazing results

Biokleen seems real good also, easier on the lungs and skin

Zing works good also

Toilet bowl cleaner. I’ve used it to get scum/minerals off my outdrive and it has always lefty it clean and shinny.

Sounds like that isn’t just a stain but hardened solid now.

high speed polisher, wool 8" pad and 3M 05954 rubbing compound will remove all that and make her shine like new. Once your happy go over with a foam pad and some 3m glazing compound. then just simply hand wax with you choice to protect and maintain shine. Done! Recomend investing in a decent polisher for future I personly use dewalt
Variable speed polisher with soft start works great no bog down and easy to control.

I don’t recommend abrasion to remove scum/lime/minerals.

There are harmless and biodegradable liquids and gels that will do the job.

Remember every time you compound you’re removing material from your hull. If not careful you could damage your finish.
