Whistling Noise in Intakes

I may have an intake whistle noise. I went to the Sea Ray dealer and bit the bullet - I bought two intake silencers. They are about 1" cubes of foam. I dropped almost 3 big ones (dollars).

Now, I assume that the installation is fairly basic? Air cleaners off, little foamy cubes in, air cleaner on. Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any details?

This is for Merc 8.1 S Horizons.

By the way, we spent the whole weekend on the boat at Bay Point Marriot, Panama City Beach, Fl. We needed to be there for my daughter's dance competition. Having the floating bed 'n breakfast and college basketball game sports bar (aka my boat) on hand was a God's send. I really enjoy watching her dance, but the rest of the time can be really boring, but not when you have a boat with you.

The marina is nice. The service is great. All kinds of shore power, water, and cable TV are all available. There's a 1st class restaurant and quite a display of yachts. There's a shuttle to the hotel if you're so inclined.

That's all there is to it. I had the same problem on my 5.0's. Just a small piece of white poly fill material cut to size. Total repair time 30secs.

The 8.1 is a 496, right? As far as HO goes, it's not the HO engine, but it is multi-port fuel injected for 370 HP, which isn't far from HO.

And, it was chilly in PC yesterday, but not on the boat!

Crusader 8.1s can whistle too. There was a service bulletin on it. I've gotten used to it because it only happens around 2100 rpms and that is not a setting that I run at. I only hear it when coming off plane and then for a short period of time. It is not a symptom of a problem.

Well I am glad the 5.0 does not whistle. You should have heard my wife after we took a test ride on the 270SD with 496, :smt021 She had those salesmen running for cover... :smt043 They had to show her they could fix that major problem!! :grin:
