Whistles Required?

Not at all. In fact I am buying two tomorrow for our PFDs.

But you missed the point. Is a whisle required as water cops are giving out $80 tickets. Are they required or not?

Look at links post 1

Don't think I missed the point. A whistle is required. Does it have to be a metal Police whistle? No.

My point is if some State LEO wants a real whistle, buy a whistle. If some Federal LEO wants a whistle (as called for in the Subpart D), then beep your horn. If some local LEO wants both, then be able to show him both. Maybe a VSC (Vessel Safety Check) from the US Coast Guard Auxillary might help one make sure they were in compliance.

Thanks. Do you think the regs and handbook conflict? Did that and I was asked to toot my horn! Got my 2012 sticker. Can the Sea Ray horn really be called a horn?

More like a Goose farting. It is sorry!

I notice someboody mentioned a bell. I have a bell mounted just under the helm seat. It will ding around in rough weather from time to time. Early this year I headed out into Lake Pontchartrain in La in a little bit of chop. I had a early season miss in the port engine and wanted to see how it was running. Still missing so I was on edge and a little pissed. About a mile out of the mouth of the river the bell fell off its mount and hit the floor dead solid perfect. I thought the engine had blown my ass off. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard on a boat and it was right under the seat. I think everybody on the boat had to check their pants. Talk about a USCG noise maker.

The only conflicting thing I see is the 'bell' requirement. Maybe that handbook isn't up to date. In either case I don't see us <39.4 footers/12 meters has changed.

I think I will buy a few whistles and attach them to mine and the Admirals PFDs....

Just checked my PFD's and whistles today.

I replaced my horn for about the third time and this one sounds like a VW bug.

You want to make sure your whistles "pea" is not going to degrade when exposed to the high humidity on a boat if it is attached to your grand daughters PFD I am sure she will provide repeated test cases.

Last summer while getting USCG Aux safety inspection the fella gave me a handful of whistles to attach to all the PFD's don't remember if he said it was required but it seemed like a good idea.
