Would appear to be a discrepancy. I was not asked if I had a whistle, just a sound making device...Horns

Look at:

Look at page 25/26 and the note on page 26.

Title 33, Part 83, section 83.33(b):

b) Vessels of less than 12 meters in length. A vessel of less than 12 meters in length shall not be obliged to carry the sound signaling appliances prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule but if she does not, she shall be provided with some other means of making an efficient sound signal.

I haven't been asked for them but I have a couple of my old cop whistles on board. They're not required but I figure if I can show a water cop that I'm trying to be overly safe he might overlook some other minor infraction.

You are getting bogged down in semantics. Your horn is a whistle - think train whistle. It's a throwback to steam power.

I've got the boat horn (pathetic), a freon horn ( let's play football), and a whistle ( think Titanic movie). I am over cautious on the boat. Have many systems and back ups If I think of them. The Admiral is always saying " How come they don't do that?" or "Do others do that?" I'm coming back to port under my own power. Others can't say that at my marina.

Well put!

I think I will buy a few whistles and attach them to mine and the Admirals PFDs....

Good idea. We have automatically activating strobe light and a whistle on each of our life jackets for the immediate family that are always on the boat. I also have one of those small air whistles on the boat. And of course my horn, which when the USCG boarded last year, made fun of when I sounded it for them to pass my safety check.

OK let me muddy the water... DNR states that we must have a bell on the boat.. Coast Guard does not.. Coast Guard and DNR state that we must have additional sound making devices that all members on board have acess to. So... we have the following..Air Horn (think football), Whistle (2), Bell.. Plus of course the ever popular Sea Ray Horn ( buzzer)

I was stopped and asked if I had a whistle. I proceded to pucker my lips and blow. He said sounds good and he moved on.

I'd rather over do it than under do it. I love the PFd idea of one per vest, plus the strobe light.

Not at all. In fact I am buying two tomorrow for our PFDs.

But you missed the point. Is a whisle required as water cops are giving out $80 tickets. Are they required or not?

Thanks Woody! That says it all.....Good conversation

I do use those little whistles when we're hiking in the woods. Each grandkid has one in case they get separated from the rest of us. There's not much danger here in the woods but I figure it would make it easier to find them.:lol: I never thought about keeping them handy on the water but it can't hurt so I think I'll put one on their life vests like some of the rest of you.
