Have a question for you all out there. I was sanding the bottom of my boat and along with the 2 engine raw water pick ups, I have two others. On the stbd side, one is the thru hull with a intake strainer (I call it gated) and the port side simply has the thru hull flush, no strainer.

When I disconnected the genny, it was hooked up to the flush thru hole.

Question: Which one should the Genny be plumbed to?

It would seem logical to me to hook it up to the one with the strainer as it would asist when you are "underway" in feeding the genny water. I think the other one was for a wash down system?.....

I honestly don't know if there is a "hard and fast" rule, but it would seem to make sense that any inlet should have the grate. Regardless if it has a filter/strainer on the inside of the boat, I would think the idea would be to keep large foreign objects out. Makes sense to me, anyway:smt001

Intakes should be the scoop/ strainer types for the reasons Dennis noted. But they also force water into the system when the boat is moving.

The open type should only be used for outlets. When the boat is moving the venturi effect will create suction (good for emptying your holding tank, bad for cooling systems).

Looking at the design, I would thinkg that the scoop would be for the air conditioner. Since these use centrifical pump they need to be primed.
You would not want a scoop on the Gen as that could flood the muffler and eventually cause a hydrolock. With impellers they would be self priming.
( I am just thinking this and do not have any documentation to prove one way or another.) That is the way it is set up on mine.

Good point on the generator pickup. On the AC pickup it doesn't matter as water just flows through even when the AC is off.

The scooped/grated intake should not be used for Gens because you have the possibility of forcing water into your gen while cruising. I have heard stories over the years of people hooking up their gen to the scooped type and their cylinders eventually filling with water (as well as the exhaust system, etc). Granted this should not be possible if your impellor is in good shape, but can happen.... Just a warning.

Never a scoop on a motor.

I used a strainer/scoop exactly like that to plumb a live well on my 250. It worked great to save time on the pump while cruising to the next fishing hole. It makes sense that that one would be for a wash down. You could have someone cleaning up for free as you cruised along.

All Right! Thanks for the posts. I guess it was hooked up correctly. There are two more thru-hulls forward of the pictures. One is graded and is for the A/C and the other is flush for the head.

Makes sense now.

Problem is now I have a spare thru-hull (graded) and have no idea what it went to.................

The vlave is a straight ball valve. Wash down may be?

So, just out of curiosity... the thru hull for the genny... should it still have some type of grate?

I also agree with "66" as my "scoup" is for the Air conditioner and the plain thru hull is for the Genny.
