I have a 99' 270 sundancer with a bravo III and a 7.4 mpi big block. Does anyone know the which gear lube I should be using?

Thanks,

High Performance Gear Lube - from Merc.

Do all bravo III's use the high performance (Synthetic) I only need to add a little and was told that they shouldn't mix (Dino and syn).

Thanks,

Gordon

Do not mix the gear lubes. It may lead to foaming. All Bravo III's need synthetic. The drives run incredibly hot.

Because of heat and corrosion, the Bravo III is the most problem prone outdrive Mercruiser has ever had. Why would you use anything other than what the manufacturer recommends?

I accidently mixed the lubes 3 years ago. I ended up draining the drive immediately. Somebody suggested letting it sit in the container for some time and see if the two lubes seperated. The High Performance and regular where completely layered after 1 year of sitting. They don't mix in my opinion

I was confused on this also this week. I used the yellow stripped container earlier and they seemed to change the container. I thought the hi-perf was the synthetic but the bottle does'nt say that anywhere I could find. What is the hi-perf? I have been using this in my b3 also, is this right?

Use this:

There is also a Quicksilver version in a silver bottle - same thing. Just be sure it says 'High Performance'.

Thanks mlauman.

I was buying the quick silver version noted "hi-perf" so I guess it is synthetic.

I recently noticed on my friends V-6, he was draining and changing the gear lube from the regular quicksilver lube to the hi-perf. lube. As he drained the lube in the resevoir, there was a thick studge that had built up. We called Merc which they stated that's what the regular lube does in time .... we cleaned it out and now only use the hi performance stuff. When your draining and changing, look for this sludge. Merc said it wasn't that big of a problem but should be cleaned regularly.

I found this sludge (jet black and thick) on the bottom of the reservoir in my BIII on the old 220BR. I changed the fluid religiously at 50 hours or less. My twin alpha's do not seem to develop this sludge. The sludge seems to sit on the very bottom below the fluid pickup... not sure what it is (other than the obvious guess of burnt fluid). I cleaned it out at every 50 hour service. I always used the High Performance Gear Lube + as this is what is called for by Merc
