I believe we have the Racor 75-900's on our 540 QSC engines. My searches come up with either the 2040 or 2020 filter elements. Does anyone know the exact filter element? Which specific filter should we use including...(2, 10 or 30 micron)? Any help is always appreciated.

I use the 30 mcron in the Racor primaries.

I also use the Racor 30 Micron filters in my 900MAs. The engine mounted thread-on filter is a 2 Micron element. The key to success is managing your fuel system in a manner appropriate to your climate. I use a maintenance dosage of biocide at every fill up, and shock the system at the beginnging and end of the season. I also use Power Service Diesel Kleen to compensate for the reduced lubricity of ULSD fuel. Your engines are newer versions of my older mechanical C Series. Cummins is fairly agnostic about fuel additives. As always, consult your owner's manual and figure out what makes the most sense. Your signature does not list where you boat, so I can't offer any suggestions relative to your climate.

Thanks... 30 micron it is. I will order an extra set today. I want to keep spares even though there are two filters per racor. When we when down to Key West a couple of weeks ago, we got a "water in fuel" alarm. Looked and found nothing. When we got down there, I found a tiny little bit in the botton of the Port-Outboard bowl. The filters looked ok, but I thought it might be smart to carry a spare set.

I change my signature. Thanks. South West Florida is our stomping grounds.

Related question - went fishing on a diesel sportfish a few weeks ago and was talking to the captain - he suggested replacing the fuel filters FREQUENTLY during the season - he boats in the bay too. How often to you all change your filters? Thanks in advance (sorry for possible hijack)

I generally change once per year in the fall. But I also have dual Racors and carry spare elements.

Only once, in all my years of boating have I changed elements mid season. But I also only put 100-150 hours on the engines per season.

I just filled up two weeks ago, and as soon as we get ready to leave, my Alarm system went off, but no message. Checked Alarm history...nothing..so I moved on. The next time I started her up, same thing...Alarm, but no message and no history. Yesterday, (and I haven't run but an hour or two since fueling) I start them just to spin the boat around in the slip, and Alarm and WATER IN FUEL--STARBOARD message comes on. I dripped some fuel from each Racor and on the Starboard side got a blob size of a quarter. There wasn't any apparent stuff in there, and i'm changing the filters out this week. Is the sensor for this alarm in the Racors, or in the fuel tanks? HELP!!:smt089

That is the same thing that happened to us on the way down to key west a couple of weeks ago. I did not have the spare elements so I was afraid to tear the strainers apart. We ended up getting a fuel guy (typically for polishing). He said our fuel was fine (we filled up before we left). He cleaned up all four strainers and found just a tiny bit of water in one of them. The leason learned was all four sensors are independent. Water in one even if you are not drawing off of it will set off the alarm. BTW that alarm almost drove me to jump off the boat. We also learned that they unplug pretty easy (if it happens again).
