Hi, I want to buy a depth sounder for my 175 sport. Its already got the black circular mount on the dash but its just a blank. I assume its an option when new (I bought it second hand). I want a sounder that will work well at speed and fit into the designated spot. Can someone tell me which sounder to aim for? Thanks

My '09 came with a Northstar D210 fit nicely into that spot. I think that's a discontinued item now. The Lowrance LST-3800 looks like a good fit - has both depth and water temperature.

Mine came with a Lowerance ST 3800 (I think) that sits in the middle of the dash. Works well at most speeds. Go onto the Searay website and it will give you the exact part number.

Cheers

I actually just put a Ritchie X-21 compass in the blank location on the dash, and got a Garmin 300C depth sounder/fishfinder to put on a windshield mount.

I think this will end up better in the long run for me. Not sure how much coastal boating you do, or if AUS gets much fog, but it's a must here in the Pacific NW USA.

Wazzu how far out do you go? I haven't been brave enough to venture past the heads yet as I was unsure of the Sports hull design for open waters.

I also run a Lowrance HDS 5 in addition to the stock depth sounder unit

I certainly don't head out into the straits or anything, but I can tell you that we've often been caught in fog, and having the compass is a complete life-saver. It's also redundancy at its finest, if my GPS and charts (on phone) kicks out or goes down, I can still navigate by compass (even if completely disoriented, can still run in certain directions to ensure landfall).

Nothing will put you on edge more than having a fog come in on you quickly, and get caught not knowing if you're in a shipping lane or not. That was the last time I didn't have a compass on my craft.

Besides, if you fish at all, having the Garmin (or similar) gives you the best of both worlds. Depths + fish finding.

Hope this helps!
