It goes to the cable and battery and solenoid and ammeter on dash.

Just the red BATTERY wire and the black ir green ground. The old alternator was putting out nothing. I'm thinking it had an internal regulator. I bought a new alternator and regulator from auto zone. It's got 4 tabs .I guess the 2 wires go in then 2 wires go out. Just not sure which ones.there not marked?

Auto zone doesn't sell marine rated products. Your playing with fire. What's your engine # ?
To make things simple for yourself, seeing this boat is old and the wiring is probably hacked, get yourself a marine rated single wire alternator

need to know what alt is there now.In 1973 a 3 wire trasistorized one was available and a standard 4 wire one. Remove whats there now and post some pics of the back of it.

Some alternators are self regulating. And I agree, don't put an automotive alternator on your boat. They are not ignition protected, that is they can make sparks that will blow you up if there are gasoline fumes present. Get one that us rated for marine use. It will say on it or the box UL Marine rated, or meets 33 CFR 183.410. It might even use the words ignition protected. The back should have flame screens like this or be completely sealed.
