Hello to all, I am new to boating and just registered to this site. looks like alot of great info here and advice. I am gearing up to do a little maintenance on my boat before the season starts. I would like to install new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter and perform an engine oil change. Where is the best place to purchase these parts, the dealer, West Marine, Iboats, Overton's? The mercury parts express website use to be pretty helpful, but it seems to have undergone some changes since I used it last fall. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You may want to try http://dougrussell.com/

They have the parts books on just about anything Mercury or Volvo Sterndrives - and it is all online. As far as pricing is concerned, they seem to be right inline with the local area stores, and most of the time they are cheaper.
I bought most of the volvo parts from them that i needed over the last 5 years. Although it was not much that i had to buy, they seemed very helpful

Welcome, Nice looking boat, I had a 1992 180 similar to yours. Was a great boat, enjoy

That's a great website. Similar to the way that the Mercury Parts Express site used to be set-up where you can find the factory diagrams, part numbers and prices. Thanks.

Hey neighbor...welcome to the site. That pic location looks familiar. Ft. McRae side, looking north?

I do all my own work as well, but I have found that if you stop by the dealer/marina/boat shop and get to know them, the advice/knowledge that can be gained is usually worth the few extra bucks for the parts. I use the guys at Emerald Coast Marine and sometimes Posner. Great place for hard to find parts is Byfield Marine on Olive Road. It is wholesale only, but if you set up an account with a credit card, they will sell to you and give you a catalog. Also, I have had West Marine price match in the past.

Maybe I'll see you around the pass.

Keep in touch.
