Ok...winterizing my 1990 230 CC for first time and I cannot locate the oil filter. I checked for a remote filter assembly or one on the block but I cannot for the LIFE of me find it.

I must be either blind or stupid so if someone could take pity on me and point me in the right place then that would be great

Port side, aft, bottom corner. It's a decent location when used in an automobile... but then cars trucks have one advantage we boaters don't... access from the bottom. It's kinda hard to slide underneath a boat engine on a creeper.:smt101

Once you figure out the specific contortionism required, it's not too bad.

Thanks !. Will check it out tomorrow after my back recovers from all the contortion performed today looking for the danged thing

Don't feel bad, my son and I could not find the water separator on his '05 240SD. The marina mechanic said that it was in a box by the fuel pump. Still can't find it, so, blind and stupid are still looking. But, in the meantime, the impeller crapped out. Now my son wants me to help him replace it. That should also be good for a laugh :smt101

Can't you just remove the fender liner & go in through the fenderwell? That's what I had to do on my vette.

If it's in a bad spot,I would mount a remote oil filter ,they come in single or dual filter units .never put one on a boat but have one on my pro street camaro

Vitamin I is good for that... ibuprofen:smt001

Throw a bunch of rags underneath the filter, where it will drip onto your bilge floor. It will drip, but not a terrible amount... a few ounces, maybe. I also use the bottom 3" or 4" of an antifreeze bottle as a catch pan. Then, put the filter right into the "catch pan", wipe your hand off, then remove the pan after the block stops dripping. The bottle bottom is flexible so you can bend past the motor mount and anything else... but this also means you have to be careful so you don't tip it or bend it too much.

Jerry... front, starboard, bottom corner. You either have a spin-on filter, or more likely a canister (drop-in) style. The drop-in is known as the "Generation 3" or "Gen III" cool fuel assembly as it does double duty. This is easily identified by a sturdy, black box with (3) SS bolt/screw heads on the top and a lifting handle. Here's a good thread on this, written by Dave S: http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27133&highlight=cool+fuel

Note: the spin-on filter could be inside a black box, as well. But it's not as sturdy and the lid is attached to the bottom with tabs, not bolts/screws.

Inner fender well?

I was thinking, he may have a point with the inner fender well. If you have a roto zip or a sawzall, you could cut an opening in the bottom of the hull under the engine for easy access to the oil filter. Probably an 8 X 8 inch hole should do. Then, Presto!, easy access to the filter. You won't be able to use the boat again, but oil changes would be a snap.

Wait, let's not discount this idea too fast. Based on other threads I've read, it would be feasible to think that all one would have to do is 5200 the cutout piece back in place!

Obviously that is a dumb idea. If you use 5200 you won't be able to change oil the next time. The remote filter is a great idea, the problem is the typical remote filter isn't remote enough. Mount that thing in the cockpit, maybe on the inside of the arch(if you have one)near the wet bar. If you get any drips just flush em down the sink.

Just think of it as Father-Son bonding! :smt021 Dennis has it right, and thanks to him for the link. I have the Gen III Cool Fuel Module. We were looking right at it, but it wasn't what we were expecting. I spent a few buck on the online manual and voila!

Yeah, whatever! Where did you get that kid from? Does this mean that I am a "Grandpa"? :smt009
Oh, wait a minute, that is junior!

Re: Where the HELL is my oil filter located ?

WOW !!! what a plethora of ideas. I rather like the remove inside fender well idea.

I took the port side fender off of my trailer and STILL CAN'T FIND THE DANG THING !!!
Is it the port side as you look at the trailer from the front of the trailer or as if you were sitting in the the captains chair driving the boat ?

Also, how the heck does the oil stay in the boat if the filter is located under the port fender of the trailer.

You guys are very confusing....

Re: Where the HELL is my oil filter located ?

P.S. I also get the joy of trying to get the fuel filter to come off AFTER some hammer head decided that a 1/4 -1/2 a turn after the filter seats was not enough to make sure that it was tight.

You need to tighten the filter to the point that only a person who was either as strong as a gorilla or had the arms of a steroid bound weigh lifter could unscrew it...

REALLY NICE !!! :smt038:smt013

And... what if you are located in the Southern Hemisphere?

Tell me about it. 83 220 srv, had to pull the motor yesterday because all that was left of the oil filter was the very top ring that holds the rubber gasket. Channel locks, screwdriver and then air chisel the day b4 that to get it to look so custom...
