I just got my USCG Documentation and it requires that I put the Official Number somewhere on the inside hull with 3" numerals. Where does one typically put them and what is used for the numerals?

Bob, I'm going from memory here but I believe the USCG requires that you put the number inside the hull and in such a manner that if the numbers were removed it would be obvious.

Spray painted numbers work but I don't think the plastic peel-n-stick numbers from Lowe's would comply.

Yes as above.
Mine are stamped on a piece of wood that is epoxied to the hull in the engine/bilge area and then sealed over with poly to make it almost impossible to remove without damage.

I am going to install mine today per my broker's recommendations. I bought the 3" vinyl letters and numbers from West Marine which I am going to install in a smooth hull location inside the engine room (just above the batteries I think) and then I bought clear epoxy to paint over the numbers and seal them in place. I'm picking a location where they can be easily seen from the cockpit when the engine room hatch is raised (for CG inspection). We finally got the boat name installed on the transom last week so we'll finally be "legal" for our CG documentation.

Thanks guys, Larry's suggestion sounds like the easiest for me, but stencilling would be pretty easy also.

Dan, if I had taken woodshop in high school, your suggestion would be a possibility too!:smt043

This is what they want to see....do the peel n stick numbers covered with clear epoxy. Do it in a place where it's easy to see when you open the hatch.

It goes below the waterline anywhere you have space for it. That's in case you burn to the waterline. It must be screwed or glued in place. Use this guy:

His work is outstanding and his price is excellent.

Mine is on a piece of wood next to the holding tank in the bilge.

HOW DO I MARK MY VESSEL?
The official number assigned to documented vessels, preceded by the abbreviation "NO." must be marked in block-type Arabic numerals at least three inches high on some clearly visible interior structural part of the hull. The number must be permanently affixed so that alteration, removal, or replacement would be obvious and cause some scarring or damage to the surrounding hull area.

good tip on "below the waterline" in case the boat burns - hadn't thought about that and the CG isn't very specific about the location, but that makes sense.
