Is the top of the arch the only spot it will work?

No you can mount it right on top of your helm.

I put mine on the arch. But you can pretty much put it anywhere it can grab the signal - helm, bow, arch. It must be pointing up, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. On my truck, it’s tilted at about a 30-40 degree angle and still works fine.

Arch, helm whatever - just needs the line of sight. A few feet will not make a difference talking to a satellite. I have a GPS antenna that was installed for the PO right on the helm and it works fine. I hate looking at it but other that that no issues. So I would prefer the arch and if I was adding one I would go there as I have two unused mounts from old GPS's. This might be slightly different if we had hard top to deal with.

hows that work for weather?

I use the Theyr weather app in my axiom for that. Not quite as good but serviceable.

To further hijack the thread.....you cant track storms with that, correct? just download GRIB files when connected to the internet? if you have a cell signal can you get real time data on your plotter?

Not real time as far as I know.

The SiriusXM app sounds better than the sat stream and offers more channels. If you subscribe in your car, you may already have access to it.

I love the app. I wish I could run it on my Axiom. I use it in cars without sat, my echo devices, and phone it works great and does offer more channels. Only problem is you need internet which is not always available on the boat.

Put mine in the stud window ledge on a 420 AC

I have mine on the helm near the compass. The 240s don't have a radar arch and I mounted the sirius receiver and MFD on the door below the wheel. So, short wire runs. It has never been an eyesore or obstruction. Only issues is sometimes we don't think about it and throw towels over the windshield and it gets blocked. Seems to do ok with the road cover blocking it, though.

Serius has a magnetic puck that attaches to the roof of the car. I used it for a few years. I placed it in the wall of the radar arch. It worked OK in most areas. Got tired of low signal in some areas so got real external small dome antenna and mounted it on a 1 foot post on the radar arch. It worked much better than the hockey puck. I think the cable length was 50 feet.

I had a Garmin GXM 53 put in as part of a larger installation, actually by one of Jim's guys at BOE. He installed the antenna inside the helm behind one of the MFD's. I did a "what the heck" as he was putting it in and he said they did it all the time and to wait and see. It worked fine and continues to work fine. The antenna is essentially right up against the top of the enclosure with the helm enclosure, windshield and hardtop between it and the sky.

Had a 340 where the previous own ran it to the front anchor chain storage mounting it inside. I was surprised to find it there and it always locked in on the signal.
