When is it too hot to go boating?

Temps here have been mid 90s- 100 with high humidity and surface temp about 90...WHEW. We have been going out some in the afternoon for a cruise (keepin the breeze going) and swimming. The worst part is getting the boat ready to get off the dock and then getting her ready to put up.

Mike.........Does Duke also operate the Steam Plant on Wylie? I know the cove where they dump the hot water was over 100 degrees earlier this year.:smt101

Dave

That's Plant Allen. Yes they put out some hot discharge, however they sorta run like a peaking unit. We put it on line when we need the extra capacity, then shut it back down. Be sure Duke doesn't like the warm water temps, it messes with our generation capacity.

If that is TOO HOT TO BOAT, we would never be able to leave the dock - We have that heat 9 months of the year!

It's the same only different. I just returned from the Abaco's, Double Breasted and Grand Cay, Carters Cay, West End. The water temps were running around 80-84 but it still felt refreshing to get into the water. Plus the cool ocean breeze is great. I will concede that in Freeport Harbor it's smoking hot. But then again that's why I skip it and go to the Abaco's!!!

Trust me 95 degree water temps are not something that can be easily conveyed untill you jump in it.

It has been 95 to 100 around here for weeks. This means jellyfish have moved in as the water has heated up (about 85 water temp). Puts a damper on swimming around here.

We went to Annapolis harbor Saturday night and there were plenty of mooring balls available so it appeared it was too hot for many a boater this past weekend. Usually the harbor is packed on a Saturday night...

IMHO it is never too hot. Just crank the throttle and make a little breeze!

Hi Wayne,

We are docked at Pirate's Cove in Clay on the Oneida River. We are right on the fuel dock with the tan canvas. Usually there every weekend.

Looks like low to mid-eighties this weekend in PA with lower humidity. Hope the more moderate temps hang around for awhile... not that the heat wave has kept us off the water.

Then again, we've been b*tchin' about the rainy or cool summers for the last three years so this must be a case of 'be careful what you ask for'. It's hard to complain...

We went boating today but in hindsight it was one of those days when my wife and I both agreed we should have stayed home. Not only was the air temperature hovering at 100 degrees our water temperature is at 90 + degrees as well pretty much everywhere. Surface water temperatures are even hotter than that. So you cant even cool off in the water.

In the nine years I have boated on Lake Wylie I can never remember water temperatures being this high ever. The bad part about this is August, traditionally the hottest month, is yet to come. If I had cockpit air conditioning maybe boating wouldn't be too bad but that wasn't an option on a 260DA. :smt043

I know we are not alone with this hot weather but I wonder who has waters as warm as ours?

Dave

Dave,
The ocean water is great (76-77degrees). Get out of the lake and some cruising in the ocean.

i have to admit -i don't mind the heat at all when boating-just get in the water about every hr. or so ,and it keeps the body temp down--i'm 61 w/ms,and my hands, and feet remember janurary, and feburary real well !!

Yea, those damn good-for-nothing jellyfish! Just when the water temp gets warm enough to actual enjoy a swim, here they come. At the mouth of the Potomac River, it's 85F. Combine that with air temps and jellyfish, and it's not all that pleasant to be out.

But I'm not complainin'...it sure won't last forever.
