I was looking at a 2008 270AJ in the dealer's showroom today and was a bit surprised to see it now has a mid-cabin. When the newer style 270AJ first came out in 2005 they didn't have mid-cabins which was a big drawback (to me at least) compared to the 260DA. Since they are built on identical hulls, there is little difference in space below decks now between the 270AJ and the 260DA.

Is the mid-cabin a new change for 2008?

Dave,

I believe that the mid-cabin is new for '08. We looked at one at a show this winter and were also impressed with the added space.

Our dealer has an brand new '06 that they were trying to move and their starting offer was in the mid 60's. Don't remeber the what engine or options were included. His opening question to us was how important was the extra cabin space?

We liked it but will probably wait for a few used ones to hit the market in a couple of years.

Hey Dave,

I don’t know the answer to your question, but…………did you see the new 290 Amberjack? The cabin is better then the 280 or 290, its also a foot wider and that makes it much more roomy, the fuel take is…..wait for it………………………250 gallons! Awesome!

Say Ray – if you are listening:
Take the 290 Amberjack
-Keep the hull the same. This should save you big $. Now are you listening?
-Add a forward facing fiberglass arch. Heck the one off the current 310 Suncancer just may fit.
-Make the cockpit like the current 260 Suncancer with the port lounge and all that wonderful seating.
- Consider making the swim platform a bit bigger, say 2 ½” deep.
Bingo, your new 290 Suncancer, all w/out making a new mold. Having a common platform between a 290 Amberjack and Suncancer should offer tremendous savings.

Did I mentions that the gas tank is 250 gallons? Imagine the range. That would be cool!

Dave,

In 2005 and 2006 only the lazarette, a large storage area, was available on the AJ270. In 2007, the lazarette was standard and the mid cabin was an option. In 2008 only the mid cabin is available. Apparently, the lazarette is not even available as an option.
I'm glad I purchased a 2006 AJ270 in Aug 2007 since for my purposes the lazarette is much more useful than the mid cabin. It is about 8' X 3' X 3' and will be great for storage of fishing equipment as well as other gear.

(maybe I'm stating the obvious ... but ...)
The previous Amberjacks had an inboard ... that's why they didn't have the mid cabin. The inboard took up the room for the mid cabin. The new ones don't have the inboard option ... just BravoIII stern drives.

I agree with Seabbatical, the lazarette is much more useful!! the storage is great for chairs, vests, water toys and extra water. Additionally, i have friends with the 260 Dancer and they use the aft bunk for wet vests and fishing gear - it stinks every time i go down below!!!
