Bought a 2004 sea ray sedan recently and anchored off for the first time this past weekend. 15 knot winds and I couldn't get my claw type anchor to hold. It did for a while but then started to drag. Thanks to Drag Queen caught it right away.
Pier neighbors seem to think Mantus only way to go. New 65lb is over $500. Looking for a good used one for now. Any advice from fellow sea ray owners?

What type of bottom are you anchoring the boat in? There was study just done and published on active captain about anchors. They found the. Eat all-around to be the Rockna. I use on our 480 and I think it is 75lbs but I would need to double check.

I have the Lewmar "Delta" on my 48DA. Never any issues in Lake Michigan in the Chicago area. It's a non-hinged plow type, and mine is stainless so it looks great, too. 44lb. Not cheap though, about $1700 from WM currently.

I have a Delta Fast Set on mine, with all chain rode. I've anchored all over the northeast, and only seem to have issues with seagrass.. Just doesnt seem to dig in. Are you getting a good set prior to shutting down? Still want to put out scope, which can then be shorten after a good set.. Just my 2 cents..

More details
How did you set your anchor, depth of water and how many feet of rode was out. Lots of good posts here on how to anchor.

I'll anchor in around 8-9 ft when possible so that i dont have to worry about tide changes and then put out 7-8 to 1 scope. Come to a complete stop, drop the anchor straight down and start backing up till i get the scope and then let the movement be stopped by the anchor. I'll then give it another tug with the engines, then set my chain stop... typically i'll use Drag Queen app, and i'll write my GPS stats into a book i keep at the helm. I'll then reference back to it after a bit to confirm i've not moved.. We rode out a huricane on anchor in Block Island old harbor 3 years ago, tied with a couple of other boats... all on anchors.. never moved..

I had a Delta Fastset on my last boat too, as long as you get a good set, you typically wont move..

BINGO! Got off my dock and talked to a few old boaters (like me) and they said same thing, did ya set the anchor? Nope, didn't set it. I've been such a dock to dock guy for to many years I'm forgetting the basics! Cant wait to go back and try it only with setting it. I have all anchor rode and let out 7 to 1 scope in 7 ft gulf coast muck. thanks for all replies!

I live and cruise on the texas gulf coast and its sandy to mud bottom. I haven't been working on that project. I just installed a rear thruster. etc etc.
I'm also going to need one that the point will fit into stainless notch under under rollor that is separate from from any of the winch, chain etc.
I've been such a marina to marina cruiser I forgot about "setting" the anchor so I'm going to try that before I move on with another anchor. chuck

I've never had an issue with the factory anchor in mud. Give it another try before spending the money.

If my memory serves me right, your 480DB comes with 55LB Delta anchor. When deployed properly, it usually does a good job as an all-around anchor. As you found, the cause of your drag was due to the way the anchor was set (actually not set). Just make sure you put out proper scope (I usually go with 10:1, all chain), set it with revers and I'm sure you'll be fine.

We have a Rockna on ours and once it is dropped, scoped, set it is good. We were once a emergency anchor for a three boat rafting and I was in the middle. On my port was a 60 Hyatt and starboard was a 500 Sundancer. The Hyatt anchor lost its hold and transferred all to mine. We held the load in a really strong current, but decided to break everyone off and head home as the fireworks (July 4th) were done.

I think most people here in TX use a scoop type or Fortress just due to the muddy bottom. I have the same issue and I am replacing mine soon. As much as I like the Rocna, I think I am going to Matus just due to the cost and the fact their HQ is right in Kemah.
