The well casing is ruptured below the seabed and any attempt to shut the flow off at the Blow Out Preventor (BOP) will increase pressure and erode the earth around the casing leading to the total collapse of the well head and the release of oil over a widespread area. In fact, that erosion is well underway as the 450-ton BOP is already leaning. The well will collapse, it's inevitable. The only real hope is the relief wells BP is digging can get there before the collapse of the BOP.

Me too!!! I hope and the poster there hopes he is wrong.. I agree that if it does collapse that the only answer is relief wells, shoot might have been the only answer all along too. But as he states they are months away.

I guess the only 'hope' is that this is a first of it's kind well. So being 5000 ft down past experiences may not always apply. I am assuming they needed a heck of a lot of muck to shoot down it volume wise and I suspect that the whole 'fix' they were doing was a test to see. Either they realized they needed more muck then they could get down there in a certain time period, or they realized that the well was compromised in the manner that poster stated.

It's a tragedy all around and we the people will be dealing with it for the next several years after the thing has stopped.

I hope the folks in Washington realize that if they had permitted the well to be in shallow waters, this would have been a non-event.

If would of been allowed to drill on land it would of been a non event and easily capped.
