There was a thread on this forum not so long ago about a good size Sportsfisher that sank on a delivery voyage. She went down in under 60 seconds if I recall correctly after having her bottom ripped out by a submerged object. The discussion drifted toward preparedness and how many of us actually carry grab bags.

So, do you carry a grab bag and if so what do you have in it?

Here are some picks of my grab bag which includes GPS EPIRB, Day/Night flares, knife, heliograph, sponge, first aid kit, rope, distress blanket, air horn, bailer, torch and sea anchor. What else do you think would be good to have?

Why the sea anchor/drogue? If the boat goes down, what would you use it for? Or is this just where you happen to stow it?

In my grab bag, I pretty much have the same stuff as you. I mean, these are the essentials, so I believe everybody should have them. Rope, lighter, sea anchor drogue- all are important elements that I cannot leave without. Recently, I actually bought a new bag to fit all of this. It’s the best cruelty-free leather bag that I could find online. I know it’s more on the luxurious side, but I believe that if you invest in a really good product, it can last you at least five years. So, that’s pretty much my intention. The bag has a lot of inside pockets that separates the space into sections, which is really useful in stressful situations.

If you are in rough water that is deep a sea anchor will help you point into the wind. That is my theory and why I carry one. I could be wrong any one know if I am correct or wrong. Our dich bag is a large pelican case we have at helm. Theory is it will provide some flotation if we leave boat and not able to get into dinghy.
