Im just doing some spring thinking here and I finished the season with a noise which I think its the U-joint?
It makes a noise when turned to extreme right or left.
Some people said it might be a gimbal bearing, but someone told me to tell if it is the gimbal or the U joint you can do this test.
While your in neutral you rev up the rpm's and then turn it right to left and if you hear that same noise its a Ujoint,If it only does it while boat is in gear its a gimbal.
Well It does it while its in neatral,so is it safe to say its a Ujoint?
People say its a pretty simple job and can be done at home,Is it as simple as popping off the trim cylinders, undoing the 5 nuts and pulling the outdrive off,The drive shaft should be right there correct and just slide out?
I replaced a ujoint in my cars drive shaft I would assume its pretty much the same for this.
Also while im in there is the gimbal bearing at arms lenght to spin by hand to feel it,or is more needed to be removed to get to?
If the job is pretty much like I described I will do at home, but if I decide to bring to the shop what is the ball park figure for a job like this?

Pretty much as you described. I don't know about the validity of your test as the drive shaft is spinning all the time....in neutral or not. I did mine by myself. I would replace the gimbal bearing while you are at it. The bearing is only about $70 bucks and I would do it while you are in there. I used Auto Zones tool loaner program and got a slide hammer for the gimbal and a press for the u-joint crosses. I wound up using a socket and hammer to drive out the crosses anyway. Here is a link to my outdrive extravaganza with some pics of my job.

What Quint4 said. Yes, it is that easy to pull off your outdrive. Well...almost, but you also have to be careful about where the shift lever is on the lower unit. Read any "how-to" on removing it and it'll tell. I've not done it in 3 years, so I forget the details, but I will be doing it in early spring to both of my outdrives.

Since you say you've changed U-joints before, it's exactly the same on the outdrive.

And yes, I would change the bearing while you are at it. I too used AutoZone's free loaner slide hammer to pull mine.
