What Would You Have Done?

To me there are alot of 'it depends'. Talking or other noises that might give me a sense of how many, what they're doing, whats their purpose. In most cases I think I'd go up to the cockpit, saying the cops are on the way, get the F out of here. If I have a gun I'm not threatening with it, I'm not going to let them see it. If I feel they want to come below then I'll stay down there and deal with them as they come through the door and down the steps.

Some quick decisions might have to be made but I'm not automatically going up guns a blazin', or threatening with one....it be my luck I'd scare someone and cause them to pull their weapon.

This post has me thinking...right now from down below I can only turn on the floor level courtesy lights in the cockpit, they're not much. It would be nice to be able to turn all the hardtop lights on too, really light 'er up. In the case I choose to go up and confront whatever is going on it would be helpful to see real good.;)

I wonder how the opinions here would change if instead of “kids” they were a gang of black males or a violent gang.

At that hour I don’t know I could tell race, nor that I would care, no way anyone could discern their intentions at 3:00am in the dark.

If they were gang members, some here and their families would be dead.

I’ll stick to my method. That warning shot could just as easily be a miss. I doubt after a miss there wouldn’t be much need for follow up shots.

First call I make is to my lawyer, not the popo.

I hear ya'. I don't care about age, I'll treat them all the same. Every once in a while you hear of pretty young kids ganging up on adults, beating the piss out of them or worse.

Many folks these days are installing Ring Cameras on their boats. If was in the aft deck area of the OP's boat the motion sensor would turn on the camera and light and probably make the group move along to another boat. Depending on the level of cell service/wifi connectivity he would be alerted and be able to assess the situation on his phone from the security of the cabin. Just a thought.

That is a state law and only pertains to your state. While other states like Florida has those laws others don't, I live in MD and there isn't a brandishing law.
Every States laws are different, you as a carrier must have some knowledge of your states laws.

I completely agree with Woody. No firearm would be seen but it would be with me as I went up to talk with them.

Bond is a small Darringer style handgun. Heavy as hell, so not so great for carry. It’s perfect for the boat. Close range, self defense.

This happened to a friend of mine at a very popular lake near Nashville TN. No black gang, no shouting. My friend had just ordered a new 390EC and it had been delivered by the dealer and secured in his slip for their first weekend on the boat.

When his family arrived he discovered another family sprawled on the cockpit eating pizza watching a football game on his cockpiy TV.

The owner knew the family which happened to be the mayor of the adjoining town and his. family. They were unapologetic and proceded to continue enjoying their pizza and the game. It was a cold fall day and his heater wasn't working in his houseboat in the next slip over so his excusde was come watch the game with us but the pizza is amost gone. My friend calmly explained that "we are going out on our new boat so you guys need to get off the boat now. My friends wife videoed the whole encounter including t he oven packing t hat was thrown on the galley floor and the spilled pizza sauce and cheese spilled in the oven.

When our friends got home they called the county Sheriff and explained the problem and Sheriff asked on question……..Does the boat in question have a bathroom and sleeping quarters? Then, "if I charge the mayor with trespassing will you go to court when the case if adjudicated? That is what happened but the judge assigned was a friend of the mayor (trespasser) and got our friends to settle the case by having the ServePro completely detail the interior, exterior and launder all the sheets and towels.

Could have been an easy outcome, but the owner of the boat relocated the it to his home in Destin Fla so the clean up was very expensive but the boat was cleaner than the Sea Ray dealer delivered it to the buyer.

Don't know how long ago this happened but if that happened this day and age, I would post the video and story on every social net work page imaginable and see how that played out in town and then perhaps show up at a city council meeting to display the mayor's conduct. It is this kind of crap behavior and attitude that our city leaders have that lead to the graft and corruption that is common place.

OMG…what the hell were they thinking?

They weren't thinking. Unfortunately, we are living in a time where there are few limits and no common sense guiding decisions.

I'm not sure I'd go all "El Capitan" on them, but I'd have trouble restraining myself.

I wouldnt have said anything. I would have come out of the cabin with my pistol grip shotgun and pumped it, pointed it at one of them, and said...you have the count to 3. Hit the water and perhaps my finger wont spasm. If they didnt move fast enough I would have shot one shell over their heads, repump, and tell them to start swimming.
YUP!

I would treat it the same as someone walking into my home.... kick some ass and call the cops at the same time.
The variable would be if we were at the dock Park Service would get to the boat in about a hour if we were out on the lake park service would not even come out at that hour.
So out on the lake we are on our own. I would of without a second thought have a firearm in hand and ask what boat they came from ( having our gun would of been to protect us from not knowing who thare are and what there intent is). I then would tell them to get the @#$% off our boat and I will be dealing with their parents from that point.
