What would you guys suggest?

I was in Molson9's spot with my electronics when I brought the boat. I used an iPhone, upgraded to an iPad, then last year I was able to get a Simrad NSS8 unit for $680 new after their rebate. They were rolling out a new model and were deep discounts on the old one. Installed it last season and it work great. Internal antenna and the built in charts are nice. I might wait another season and get a Navionics card for it. I've used both the Garmin and Navionics apps and I like them both.

Like Robinson Crusoe, it's primitive as can be!

i use my HTC One android smart phone with the Navionics app...i have a suction mount for the phone on the side windshield...works great....i have never had it get hot and shut down but i did have that problem with my ipad once....

if you are on an inland lake like me let's face it, after a while after you learn to navigate the lake by sight using landmarks...then GPS is no longer really needed....now if you boat at night then the need for a GPS increases since you may not be able to see all your landmarks....i primarily use the Navionics app to set markers for the marinas and restaurants on the lake and i use the 'tracking' feature that leaves a bread crumb trail behind the boat as it moves across the screen...to get back to home port simply follow the bread crumb trail...this works very well at night....the screen size on the smart phone is large enough to see...the screen can be zoomed in and out to give you what level of detail you need....the screen is bright enough to be seen well enough except in the brightest direct sun light....then you may need to shade the screen with your hand to get your bearings for a couple seconds....

IMHO no need to spend big $$ on an elaborate GPS/chart plotter system when you boat on an inland lake....but they do look pretty in the dash.......

This ^^^^^ is true.....I'll probably use the dough for a teak cockpit table instead.....looks like I can get the table, sealer, and a complimentary teak serving tray for under 4 bills.
